James Thorne Earns Eagle Scout Award
James M. Thorne, has attained Eagle Scout, the highest rank awarded in Boy Scouts of America.
His project was to landscape several parking lot islands at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Colbert. He selected, bought and organized the planting of numerous trees, shrubs and flowers. He also organized several fundraisers to finance the $1,000 project.
Thorne, a junior honor student at Gonzaga Prep, is the son of Don and Sharyn Thorne of Colbert.
He is a member of Boy Scouts Troop 258.
Polly McMahon, Spokane Falls Community College human services instructor, received the Washington Association of Occupational Educators 1998 Excellence in Teaching Award.
Mitchelle Tessensohn graduated with honors from the International Air Academy, Vancouver, Wash., and is now employed with Delta Airlines in Dallas.
She is the daughter of Sherry and Ben Tessensohn, Spokane, and a 1997 graduate of Spokane Falls Community College.
Michael Wilson, Spokane, had his poem, “Goodbye Lady Di,” published in “Verdant Lands of Spring,” a compilation of poetry by The National Library of Poetry.
Ten Spokane high school graduates received scholarships to attend Western Washington University in Bellingham.
Jennifer Bell and William Dirks received $1,800 Minority Achievement Scholarships awarded to the most academically prepared and involved freshmen and transfer students.
Bell, daughter of Michael Bell, also received a $920 Al Swift Scholarship from Western’s Huxley College of Environmental Studies.
Dirks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dirks, received a $750 tuition and fee waiver.
Mark Beeman, son of Teri Beeman, received a $250 Whatcom Art Guild Scholarship; and Jason Borhauer, son of Larry and Laura Borhauer, was awarded a $2,500 Intermec Manufacturing Management Scholarship.
WWU music department awarded the following scholarships: Gian Bruno, son of Lana Bruno, received a $750 Winds Scholarship; Katherine Frankhauser, daughter of John and Mary Frankhauser, received a $500 Winds Scholarship; and Geoffrey Larson, son of Curtiss and Laine Larson, received a $200 Ticket Sales Scholarship.
The journalism department issued Jessica Luce, daughter of Karin Luce and Gregory Luce, a $750 Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association Scholarship. Katherine Schiffner, daughter of John and Karen Schiffner, received $750 in tuition and a fee waiver from the department.
Andrew Richardson, son of Kent and Diane Richardson, received $1,000 William Wade Haggard Memorial Scholarship awarded to juniors intending to teach mathematics on the elementary or secondary level.
Bill Rustemeyer, an automotive instructor at Spokane Community College, was elected to the Toyota T-Ten National Advisory Committee. He is one of six national representatives of the program and will serve as a liaison for Toyota T-Ten schools in several states.
Neva Grogan, daughter of Beverly and George Russell of Colfax, Wash., earned a doctorate in nutrition from Washington State University.
