Property owner Ken Caylor says he remembers an artesian well and a 260-foot domestic well in the area years ago. The Corps of Engineers is hoping to drop Rodeo Lake levels low enough to search for the wells. Rodeo Lake formed in 1957 as a result of the Columbia Basin Project.

Esther’s Restaurant earned bragging rights for the best bowl of red chili at the annual Winterfest Chili Cook-off. Chili lovers purchased a pass to taste chili at several local eateries, choosing their favorite by secret ballot. More than 50 people enjoyed the chili tour.

The city’s only movie theater closed abruptly Jan. 18. Theater manager Kimberly Bell received a call from Plitt Amusements in Oak Harbor, Wash., at 1:30 p.m. that day telling her to lock the doors for good after the last show. Vendors arrived shortly after that to pick up vending machines. Plitt Amusements recently announced a $1.5 million renovation project on the four-plex.

Davenport
Local police have two juvenile suspects in the Christmas-vacation burglary of Davenport Elementary School. A small amount of cash was taken, but there was no vandalism. Police Chief Charlie Varain says some of the money was retrieved, and second-degree theft and burglary cases are pending in juvenile court.
Pend Oreille County
Newport
Special entertainment is planned at halftime of tonight’s boys high school basketball game with Chewelah. Newport business teachers Rob Birdsell and Steve Shumski will have their heads shaved after coming out on the short end of a bet with their Future Business Leaders of America students. They had bet the students couldn’t raise $2,000 for the March of Dimes, but the youths have already surpassed that amount, with money still coming in.

Riverside’s Aleisha K. Oglesbee and Deer Park’s Toni M. Micheals competed at the recent state Junior Miss Program at Washington State University. Michaels, 17, daughter of Larry and Debbie Michaels, is a senior at Deer Park High School and earned more than $1,000 in local scholarships. Oglesbee, also 17, is the daughter of James and Kathy Oglesbee of Chattaroy. She is a member of Riverside High School’s National Honor Society chapter, Future Farmers of America and Future Business Leaders of America.

Those interested in learning about land-use planning are invited to a Tuesday workshop. The session, sponsored by WSU Cooperative Extension, is designed to help landowners who have not fully utilized their property. The workshop starts at 6:30 p.m. in room 106 of the Community College Building in Colville.

Two Pullman Girl Scouts have received the Silver Award, the highest award they can earn as Cadette Girl Scounts. Emily Rosenman’s work benefited the Pullman Food Bank, while Vicki Wilson’s project will benefit the Kamiak Butte Day Camp.

The Benewah County Humane Society recently elected officers to the board of directors. Officers include Isabel Barnes, president; Fred Cruzan, vice-president; Rhea Sweatfield, secretary; and Margie Todd, treasurer. At its January meeting, the Clark Fork City Council voted unanimously to oppose the county’s consideration of property along Highway 200 as a potential site for a waste-transfer station. The council’s reasons included traffic congestion, offensive odors and the close proximity to the Pend Oreille Scenic Byway. The site was the top choice of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, formed to find alternatives to the Denton Slough site.

Nancy Nelson, a vocalist from Spokane and an Eastern Washington University educator, will perform “Four Women” Tuesday at the University of Idaho. Nelson brings to life four women in Nina Simone’s classic jazz song. The performance is sponsored by the Women’s Center and Office of Multicultural Affairs as part of Black History Month. It will be in the University Auditorium at 7 p.m., is free of charge and open to the public.

Children playing with a cigarette lighter apparently caused a small apartment fire in Wallace on Tuesday night. District 1 firefighters found a small fire in a mattress in a bedroom after being called shortly after 7:30 p.m. The fire was contained to the mattress with minor smoke and soot damage in the bedroom and smoke damage in the second floor of the apartment.

Pump failure has delayed the city’s signing a completion document for the lift station project. An engineer from Thomas, Dean & Hoskins of Kalispell told the Troy City Council he also was concerned that the automatic warning system was disconnected when the failure occurred. A computer is programmed to automatically call key telephone numbers to alert the city when the pump fails. A city employee bypassed the electrical panel on the new pumps to get the system working again, and the pump and electrical panel manufacturers have been notified.
