Adams County

Othello

The local Copeland Lumber store has been sold to Lumbermans. Local manager Gordon Dahl says business should continue as usual and expects all staff to be retained. Copeland, family-run for nearly a century, also sold stores in Moses Lake, Hermiston, Richland and Pasco.

Ferry County

Republic

County commissioners recently passed a resolution on salmon-recovery efforts. The commissioners oppose new regulations on businesses, governments and families as a result of protection measures for Columbia River salmon.

Grant County

Moses Lake

The City Council hopes a cash donation will be enough to make a new soccer complex a reality. The city recently went out to bid for the planned Cascade Park Soccer Complex, but bids were too high.

Lincoln County

Sprague

The 10 graduates of the Sprague High School class of 1999 have much to celebrate. Four of the 10 earned a combined total of $100,000 in scholarships, plus four congressional awards. Brandon Bergstrom, Jodi Smith, Angela Vold and Clay Wilken all earned national awards.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

Kidnap and assault suspect Harold Young’s bail has been set at $25,000. Pend Oreille County Superior Court Judge Rebecca Baker felt the community would be at risk if the amount was lower. Young, of Oldtown, Idaho, was arrested May 24 on an unrelated charge in Idaho. He was later extradited to Washington to face kidnap and assault charges. Trial is set for Aug. 9, but Young is hoping for a venue change.

Deer Park

For the second straight season, Deer Park’s Breann Smith earned All Great Northern League first team softball honors in voting by conference coaches. Smith, an infielder, has also earned a scholarship to North Idaho College.

St. Joseph’s Hospital is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its long-term care unit. The nursing home has been home to more than 400 elderly people since 1989. The facility was updated in 1996.

Karen P. DePauw, interim dean of the Washington State University Graduate School since 1997, has been named dean, effective July 1.

A professor of kinesiology and leisure studies, DePauw was associate dean of the school from 1989 to 1997 and has been serving as associate vice provost for academic affairs since 1995. She replaces Robert V. Smith, who left WSU in 1997 to take a job at the University of Connecticut. When Smith left, his responsibilities for graduate education and research were split and George Hedge was hired for the separate position of vice provost for research.

Benewah County

St. Maries

The St. Maries School District Community Education Center will move to a former private school building at 240 S. 11th St. this fall. The district administrative offices currently housed in the building will relocate to the Shepherd Building on College Avenue, which the school district will lease. The CEC has conducted classes at the Walker Building at the Benewah County Fairgrounds since 1997. Students will attend class at St. Maries Middle School until the move is completed.

Sandpoint

North Idaho College Workforce Training Center will offer a certified nursing assistant training class beginning July 6. Classes will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., through Sept. 2 at the Life Care Center in Sandpoint. The course will prepare students for employment in extended-care facilities, hospitals, home care and hospice situations. For information, call (208) 769-3333.

Bonners Ferry

The Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission will have a public hearing July 15 to accept public comment on a special use permit application. Clifford and Mary Kramer are seeking to amend the site plan of Feist Creek Resort and to allow demolition of an existing lodging facility and construction and operation of a new 16-unit guest lodge. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the main courtroom of the Boundary County Courthouse. The application is on file at the Planning and Zoning Department at the courthouse. The Harrison Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Fourth of July Celebration Sunday in Harrison City Park. The event will include food vendors, karaoke and a performance by P.J. Destiny. A fireworks display off the breakwater the the Harrison marina will also be featured.

Latah County

Moscow

The Moscow Rotary Club, in cooperation with the city parks and recreation department, is offering a day camp, “The Future is Now,” to area youths. The four-day camp will teach business skills such as writing a resume or being an entrepreneur, and introduce students to local businesses. The camp will include trips to Dworshak Dam, Spaulding Park and Lapwai. Two sessions will begin July 12 and July 19. Lookout Pass

U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Susan Jehebers-Matthews has approved a proposal by Lookout Recreation Inc., to create two new ski runs at the Lookout Pass Ski Area. The runs will be on the southeast side of Runt Mountain. Lookout is in the first of a three-phase plan to improve and expand the facility.

Libby

The Libby Chamber of Commerce has commissioned Mike Young of Libby to create a sign for the entrance of J. Neils Memorial County Park. A dedication ceremony for the renaming of the park will begin at 3 p.m. July 10, before the events for Logger Days.
