One week after a jury could not decide whether a respected cardiologist was negligent in her husband’s death, the widow of Boston Celtics captain Reggie Lewis said the inconclusive end to the lengthy trial was the result of a lack of courage by the panel.

Speaking for the first time since a judge declared a mistrial in the malpractice trial, Donna Harris-Lewis said she will appeal and seek a retrial of Dr. Gilbert Mudge, who publicly diagnosed Lewis with a benign fainting disorder two months before the NBA All-Star collapsed and died while practicing jump shots in July 1993.

A 14-year-old Special Olympian from Egypt died in his sleep, probably from an epileptic seizure, officials of the Special Olympics World Summer Games said. Mohamed Abdul Baset Barin, a volleyball player, was pronounced dead in his room at North Carolina’s Morrison Hall at Chapel Hill, N.C., after his coach called paramedics.

The Maloof family has officially gained a controlling interest of the Sacramento Kings and Arco Arena from Jim Thomas. The NBA Board of Governors approved the ownership change on May 7 and it went into effect Thursday. The Albuquerque family, headed by brothers Joe and Gavin Maloof, already has been exerting control over the franchise.
