The Senate confirmed Lawrence Summers Thursday to become Treasury secretary, elevating him from his No. 2 slot in the department to succeed the outgoing Robert Rubin.

Senators approved Summers’ nomination by 97-2, underlining the lack of controversy that had accompanied his selection by President Clinton.
