Beauty sacrificed in name of development

The new addition to the surrounding hills serves as such a lovely backdrop and featured attraction to our pristine lake community.

In case you haven’t noticed, we have a new open-pit mine that was recently developed (like a festering, open sore) midway up Canfield Mountain. There is, of course, a castle to go with it and a scar so severe that I fear the view is marred forever.

What nature carefully and painstakingly created in all of its beautiful array was ignorantly destroyed in a matter of a couple of months - and I cordially invite anyone as outraged as myself to feel free to write letters and make phone calls to your local commissioners, planning board, press, and anyone else possibly or remotely responsible for this deplorable deed.

The irony in all of this is that the very beauty that attracts newcomers to this area is the first to be sacrificed on the holy alter of development. Somehow that old saying - “can’t see the forest for the trees” seems so relevant in this case. My heart breaks every time I look up at that mess, and believe me, it’s visible from just about anywhere you look up from in this quickly disappearing Mecca. Thomas D. Keenan Coeur d’ Alene
