Companies doing business with Washington state won’t have to worry about Year 2000 computer glitches hampering the state’s ability to pay for work. On Friday, Gov. Gary Locke’s office said the state made a smooth transition into its 2000 fiscal year, which began July 1. Karen Bresnahan, of Idaho’s Information Technology Resource Management Council, also said no problems had been reported with Idaho’s fiscal year conversion.

Forrest Mars Sr., who created M&Ms candies and built one of the biggest fortunes in America as head of the Mars candy empire, has died at 95.

The Oldsmobile Cutlass, the long-running nameplate that graced some of General Motors Corp.’s most popular cars in the 1970s and 1980s, was retired Friday as the last of the slow-selling 1999 sedans rolled off the assembly line.
