U.S. champion Mark Crear ran a season-best 12.98 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, beating world record-holder Colin Jackson of Britain at an IAAF permit track and field meet in Zagreb, Croatia.

Bruny Surin of Canada swept the men’s 100 and 200 meters. Surin set a meet record in the 100, clocking 10.08 and he took the 200 in a track-record 20.29.

U.S. Davis Cup captain Tom Gullikson picked Alex O’Brien to complete a roster that already included Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and Todd Martin.

The Calgary Flames re-signed veteran defenseman Steve Smith. Terms of the contract weren’t disclosed.

Former New York Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau was arrested New York for violating an order of protection in an ongoing domestic dispute, police said.
