More Gold For Warkentin
Olympic hopeful Mark Warkentin picked up two more golds and cracked the University Games record for the men’s 800-meter freestyle by nearly 4 seconds, leading the U.S. swimming team to wins in five of the day’s six events.
Warkentin won the 800 free in 8 minutes, 0.81 seconds. He eclipsed the mark of 8:04.80 set by Canada’s Thurlough O’Hare at the 1993 University Games.
Ninety minutes later, he anchored the U.S. team to victory in the 4x200 freestyle relay in 7:27.33.
Jeff Somensatto (200 butterfly), Beau Wiebel (400 individual medley) and Kimberly Black (200 freestyle) won the other U.S. golds Monday.
The U.S. women opened defense of their 1997 basketball gold medal by beating China 107-89.
The U.S. men’s team improved to 3-0, and stretched its University Games winning streak to 35 games overall, by thrashing the Czech Republic 102-43. Gonzaga’s Matt Santangelo hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with eight points and two assists in 15 minutes of action.
