Records Fall At University Games

Terrence Trammell brought some good, old-fashioned showmanship to the otherwise sedate University Games while winning the men’s 110-meter hurdles.

The American wore yellow sunglasses despite the onset of dusk, preened before settling into the starting blocks, and strutted across the finish line with arms spread, as if begging the sparse crowd at Son Moix Stadium to cheer his relatively pedestrian time of 13.44 seconds.

World record-holder Mihaela Melinte defended her women’s hammer throw title with a heave of 243 feet, 7 inches, the sixth-best effort in history and a games record. Cuba’s Daymi Permi ran her heat of the women’s 400-meter hurdles in 54.57, slicing .37 seconds off the games record.
