Ten years ago: Actor Laurence Olivier died at age 82. The American League won the 60th All-Star Game, defeating the National League 5-3 in Anaheim, Calif.

Five years ago: Haiti’s army-backed regime ordered the expulsion of international human rights observers. President Clinton, on his first official visit to Germany, urged his hosts to take on a stronger leadership role in global affairs. Shawn Eckardt was sentenced in Portland, Ore., to 18 months in prison for his role in the attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan.

One year ago: Air Force Lt. Michael Blassie, a casualty of the Vietnam War, was laid to rest near his Missouri home after the positive identification of his remains, which had been enshrined at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington, Va.
