Diver Missing Off San Juans

Mon., July 12, 1999

The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities were searching for a man who disappeared Sunday while scuba diving off this island in the San Juans.

According to the Coast Guard, the man was diving with a group on a recreational dive boat. The group surfaced after diving ten feet from shore at Raccoon Point and noticed the man was missing.

The Coast Guard was notified at 12:15 p.m. Sunday and launched a helicopter and a boat to search for the missing man. The Whatcom County Sheriff’s office dispatched a dive team to the scene. A Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft with divers on board also responded, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The diver’s identity was not released.
