Five years ago: O.J. Simpson pleaded innocent to the slaying of his ex-wife, Nicole, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

One year ago: The Senate Armed Services Committee rejected, on a 9-9 vote, Daryl Jones’ bid to become Air Force secretary. President Clinton, with Republican lawmakers at his side, signed a bill designed to mold the Internal Revenue Service into a friendlier, fairer tax collector.
