Broom And Chisel

Jamaican folk artist Elton Braithwaite bustles around a Holyoke Community College classroom teaching wood carving and a life’s wisdom to youngsters. In the evening Braithwaite trades the tools of his craft for the tools of his labor as one of the college’s janitors. A man whom the college’s president calls a treasure, Braithwaite has seen his work chosen to represent Jamaica’s wood carving tradition on an international tour. But humbly, he still spends his nights cleaning the same classrooms he teaches in.
