European Union regulators Monday approved the $10.7 billion takeover of British supermarket chain Asda Group PLC by U.S. retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Wal-Mart announced its move into Britain last month with the acquisition of Asda, which has 229 stores and annual sales of $12.8 billion. The deal more than doubles Wal-Mart’s international sales.

Microsoft Corp. sent computer and software companies a test version of its next-generation Windows operating system on Monday, an important step before the new software for running home computers can be released next year. The software, code-named Millennium, is the planned successor to Microsoft’s Windows 98 operating system.

Texas Instruments Inc., the world’s biggest maker of semiconductors for cellular telephones, agreed to buy chipmaker Unitrode Corp. for $1.2 billion in stock to add products that help cell phones run longer.
