Santangelo U.S. Team Finalist

Gonzaga University guard Matt Santangelo was chosen by USA Basketball as a finalist for the U.S. men’s World University Games team.

The 6-foot-1 guard was selected during tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colo., that ended Saturday.

Santangelo, who was named to the All-West Coast Conference team for his performance during the 1998-99 season when he was a junior, is among 16 finalists competing for 12 spots on the U.S. team.

Santangelo averaged 12.7 points, 5.2 assists and 3.3 rebounds during GU’s regular season and played an instrumental role in the Bulldogs reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Other guards among the finalists include Erick Barkley of St. John’s, Cory Bradford of Illinois, Robert O’Kelley of Wake Forest and Ohio State’s Scoonie Penn.

Santangelo’s Gonzaga coach, Dan Monson, is an assistant coach for the U.S. team. Dayton’s Oliver Purnell is the head coach.

Indians tickets on sale today

Single-game tickets to Spokane Indians baseball games go on sale today at 9 a.m.

Tickets for upper box seats and reserved bench seats are available at the Indians’ office at Seafirst Stadium and through G&B Select-A-Seat outlets.

Upper box seats are $6 and reserved bench $4. Senior citizens, children under the age of 12 and military personnel with I.D. receive a $1 discount on reserved bench tickets.

Also going on sale today are tickets for the USA Baseball-Nicaraguan National Team game that will be played at Seafirst Stadium on July 14.

The Indians have 38 home games in the short-season Class A Northwest League beginning June 21 when the Eugene Emeralds visit to open a five-game series. There are special promotions every night, including four fireworks nights - opening night, July 3, Aug. 6 and Sept. 2.

Spokane opens the season with a three-game series in Boise June 18-20 before arriving for its home opener.

L-C State wins NAIA title

Lewis-Clark State cruised past Albertson, Idaho, 7-3 to win the NAIA national baseball championship Monday in Jupiter, Fla.

It was the 10th national title for the Warriors. They previously won titles in 1984-85, 1987-92 and 1996.

Albertson needed to beat LCSC twice to claim the title. Albertson prevailed 2-1 Sunday before falling short Monday.
