Junior Golfers On Winning Team
Lani Elston and Sarah Bassett of Spokane were members of the six-member Washington Junior Golf Association team that routed British Columbia 19-8 in the North Pacific Junior Ladies team matches that concluded Tuesday at Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club in Blaine.
The Washington team won Monday’s best-ball competition 8-1/2-1/21/2-1/2 and Tuesday’s singles matches 10-1/2-1/2. Individual match results were not reported.
The entry deadline for the July 25th USGA Public Links Qualifying competition at Indian Canyon Golf Course is today at 5 p.m.
Anyone wishing to enter can call local Public Links championship committee representative Phil Anderson at (509) 926-4241.
Entrants will play 36 holes in an effort to qualify for the Public Links finals July 12-17 at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in Alton, Ill.
College soccer
Erin Cook, the all-time leading scorer for Westview High School in Portland, has signed a letter-of-intent to play for the Washington State University women’s soccer team, coach Dan Tobias announced Tuesday.
Cook finished her high school career with 43 goals and earned four first-time All-Metro League honors while leading her high school in scoring each season. As a senior, the 5-foot-7 forward/midfielder was a third-team all-state selection.
In addition to her prep career, Cook played for the Lake Oswego club team that won three straight state championships from 1997-99, Cook also earned four varsity letters in swimming and qualified for the high school state championship meet.
Cook is the seventh high school recruit to sign with WSU soccer this spring.
Mariners baseball clinic
Children 12 and under are invited to attend a free baseball clinic, featuring former Seattle Mariners outfielder David Henderson, Saturday at Seafirst Stadium.
The clinic, presented in conjunction with the Seattle Mariners Fantasy Camp, will start at 1 p.m.
Western Hockey League
The Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League, announced they will not renew coach Marc Habscheid’s contract, which expired May 31.
Blazers general manager Mike Moore said the decision was based primarily on Habscheid’s reluctance to make a long-term commitment to the franchise, which is faced with the possibility of losing 10 veterans from last year’s team.
