Peak Experience

Appa Sherpa (right) has become only the second man to climb to the top of Mount Everest 10 times. His latest trek to the 29,028-foot summit of the world’s highest mountain was completed on May 19 with American climber Ghorghe Dijmarescu (left), 38, of Hartford, Conn. The expedition was delayed two weeks while Appa Sherpa, 40, helped rescue two ill climbers. Then, when the climb finally got under way, the dry weather left bare the usually snow-covered route, revealing the corpses of at least nine climbers who had died while trying to conquer the mountain. “Every time I leave for an expedition, I get scared,” Appa Sherpa said upon returning to Katmandu, Nepal, on Tuesday. “But it is my profession and I have to do it for my kids.”
