Obituaries

Garett Sedra Spokane

Funeral for Garett K. Sedra, 19, is planned for 1 p.m. today at the Berean Bible Church. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sedra, who was born in Sandpoint, died Sunday from leukemia.

He was diagnosed with leukemia as an infant and again at age 6. He had his first bone marrow transplant in 1990.

Mr. Sedra graduated from University High School in 1998 and shortly thereafter received his second bone marrow transplant.

He had hoped to enroll in the Spokane Community College’s culinary arts program.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Sheryl Sedra of Spokane; a brother, Tyler Sedra of Spokane; his nephew, Corvin Garett Sedra; his grandparents, Bill and Freda Fournier of Sandpoint; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Idaho.

Vivian French Otis Orchards

Memorial service for Vivian French, 56, will be at 7 p.m. today at the Liberty Lake Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints..

Mrs. French, who was born in Peebles, Ohio, died May 11.

She lived in the Valleyford, Wash., area for many years before moving to Otis Orchards 16 years ago..

Mrs. French was a homemaker and a member of the Liberty Lake Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, a 15-year member of the Boy Scouts of America Pack and Troop 462, a 19-year member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and a founding member of the West Plains Community Fair in Cheney.

Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Bob; three sons, John Lawson, and Thomas and Joel Legard; two daughters, Barbara Mullins and Mary Legard; five brothers, James Burton of Bremerton, Donald Burton of Mabank, Texas, Samuel Burton of Colville, Wash., Walter Burton of Germany, and Theodore Burton of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; four sisters, Marietta Jones and Elsa Hamilton, both of Mabank, Esther Westlake of Spokane, and Martha Cameron of Alberta; and eight grandchildren.

Helen Kalez Spokane

Vigil for Helen Kalez, 93, will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the Jesuit House Chapel. Funeral Mass is planned for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. Inurnment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 85-year Spokane-area resident, Mrs. Kalez died May 27. She was born in Bachorz, Poland.

She came to Ellis Island in New York in 1914 and later moved to the Spokane area.

Mrs. Kalez was a cook in various restaurants in Spokane, retiring in 1989 after 26 years at the Jesuit House.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Altar Society and the Legion of Mary.

Her husband, Lee Kalez, died in 1945.

Survivors include two sons, James Kalez of Otis Orchards and Robert Kalez of Portland; two daughters, Virginia Sippl of Spokane and Jean Grant of Las Vegas; a brother, Henry Cruz of Spokane; three sisters, Mary Frankovic of Spokane, Sr. Melissa Cruz of Mankato, Minn., and Phyllis Pierce of Honolulu; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Allen Berglund Spokane

Graveside service for Allen W. Berglund, 79, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Trentwood.

Mr. Berglund, who was born in Tacoma, died Sunday.

He graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma.

In 1944 he married his wife, Blanche.

Mr. Berglund worked in the grocery industry in Seattle for 25 years, as a clerk and manger of retail stores. He retired in 1982.

He served as president, secretary and treasurer of the Retail Clerk’s Union Local 1105, was president of the Seattle Catholic Choir Guild, a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, the Sno King Chorale and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spokane, where he sang in the choir. Mr. Berglund also performed several seasons with the Seattle Opera.

After retirement, he spent his time between his home in Spokane and in Yuma, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Bill Berglund of Forks, Wash.; two daughters, Christine Celestino of Spokane and Nancy Abdullahi of Seattle; four sisters; and four grandchildren.

Esther Sabo Spokane

Memorial service for Esther M. Sabo, a lifetime Spokane resident, will be at 3 p.m. today at Westminster Congregational Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sabo died Sunday. She was 87.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and then worked for Farmin, Rothrock Insurance for 40 years.

Mrs. Sabo was a member of Westminster Congregational Church, the Joanna Chapter of the Listeners Club and the Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Lewis; two daughters, Kathleen Sabo of Seattle and Carolyn Pritchett of Petersburg, Alaska; a son, Steven Sabo of Spokane; a brother, David Palm; a sister, Ethel Steenbergen; and five grandchildren.

Charles Jessup Mesa, Ariz.

Viewing for Charles Marvin Jessup, 81, will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow, Idaho. Service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel with burial to follow at the Moscow Cemetery.

Mr. Jessup, who was born in Moscow, died Monday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Moscow. In 1941 he married June Andreassen.

He served with the Army mail delivery contingent in the Philippines during World War II.

Mr. Jessup returned to the Moscow area after his military service and worked for the Postal Service, retiring as assistant postmaster in 1972 after 30 years.

He was active as captain in the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department, played softball on various local teams and served as the Idaho softball commissioner for two years. Mr. Jessup was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moscow.

He spent his retirement winters in Arizona.

His wife died in 1984.

Mr. Jessup married Margaret Bartkowski in 1995 and settled in Mesa.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Jessup of Spokane; a stepson, Douglas Barker of Minnesota; three stepdaughters, Donna Hopwood and Midge O’Dell, both of Arizona, and Sally Boyle of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren and 17 stepgrandchildren.

Edna Stevens Nampa, Idaho

Funeral for Edna Stevens, a former longtime Worley, Idaho, and Rockford area resident, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Rockford United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Rockford. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stevens, who was born in Titusville, Pa., died Sunday. She was 96.

She was a teacher for several years before becoming a homemaker.

Mrs. Stevens was a member of the Worley Homemakers Club, Worley Grange and attended the Worley Community Church.

She recently moved to Nampa to be near her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Julia Truesdell of Wilder, Idaho; a son, Harold Stevens of Spokane; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Joseph Schretenthaler Spokane

Visitation for Joseph H. Schretenthaler, 76, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Bible Church. Burial will precede the service at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A 43-year Spokane resident, Mr. Schretenthaler died Monday. He was born in McHenry, N.D.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art and education from the University of Idaho.

He served as a paratrooper with the Army from 1942 until 1946.

Mr. Schretenthaler worked as a set-up technician for Womah Home Sales in Spokane for many years. He retired in 1985.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary; two sons, Joseph Schretenthaler of Vancouver, Wash., and Charles Schretenthaler of Benicia, Calif.; two daughters, Marjorie Jorgenson of Stanfield, Ore., and Julia Williams of Oklahoma City; a brother, George Thaler of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; four sisters, Evelyn Wisner of Ridgefield, Conn., Lois Klaus of Bismarck, N.D., Alma Potratz of Zap, N.D., and Mildred Pedersen of Orofino, Idaho; and six grandchildren.

Kenneth Ferrell Spokane

Visitation for Kenneth Ferrell, a longtime Spokane resident, will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Spokane Cremation and Burial Service. A memorial gathering will follow at 2 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Melody, 1107 E. Providence.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Ferrell died Sunday. He was 61.

He worked in the steel industry for many years.

Survivors include a son, Adrian Ferrell; a daughter, Melody Meese of Spokane; three brothers, Larry Ferrell, Richard and Terry Ricks; two sisters, Connie Chapman and Traci Long; and five grandchildren.

William Hutchison Sr. Spokane

Memorial service for William Royal Hutchison, Sr., a longtime Spokane resident, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Starr Road Baptist Church in Otis Orchards. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hutchison, who was born in Canada, died Saturday. He was 76.

He graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School and attended North Idaho Junior College.

Mr. Hutchison joined the Army during World War II, retiring as a lieutenant colonel many years later.

He spent winters in the South and summers in the Inland Northwest for the past several years.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; a son, William Hutchison, Jr., of Burbank, Calif; a daughter, Susan Heikes of Indian Mound, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Nancy Nick Spokane

Funeral Mass for Nancy Rose Ignace Nick, a longtime Spokane resident, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Kalispell Indian Reservation in Usk, Wash. Burial will be at the Kalispell Indian Reservation cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Usk, Mrs. Nick died Tuesday. She was 65.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Kalispell Tribe of Indians.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny McCraigie; a son, Eneas Nick of Spokane; a daughter, Joann Augustine of Newport, Wash.; two sisters, Janie Charlo Mellon of Spokane and Nellie Potter of Usk; a brother, Bobby Charlo of Seattle; and eight grandchildren.

George `Bud’ Schonfeld Spokane

Funeral service for George “Bud” Schonfeld, 90, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

A 53-year Spokane resident, Mr. Schonfeld died Tuesday. He was born in Clayton, Wash.

Mr. Schonfeld worked as a retail grocery clerk in Spokane for many years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Deer Park.

His wife, Freda, died in 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Delores Welin of Newport, Wash., and Patricia Wilcox of Worland, Wyo.; a sister, Hazel Renner; a brother, William Schonfeld; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Florence Willcock Spokane

Graveside service for Florence L. Willcock, 92, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riverside Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Willcock, who was born in Minot, N.D., died May 28.

She moved to Spokane in 1950 and worked as a bookkeeper for Gale Mechanical and Inland Asphalt for several years.

Mrs. Willcock was a longtime volunteer for the Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the Eagles Lodge Ladies Auxiliary.

Her husband, Claude Willcock, died in the 1970s.

Survivors include a son, Larry Peterson of Saginaw, Texas; a brother, Clarence Riffey of Minot, N.D.; a sister, Helen Robinson of Glasgow, Mont.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Glenna King Spokane

No service will be held for Glenna May King, 75. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

A 37-year Spokane resident, Mrs. King died Saturday. She was born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Mrs. King was homemaker and an active volunteer with the American Red Cross blood bank for 20 years.

Survivors include a son, Larry King of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Nancy Hietala of Spokane; two sisters, Ruth Arnold of Ephrata, Wash., and Annette Sovereign of Colorado; two brothers, William and James LeBeau, both of Colorado; and one granddaughter.

Ruth Sheridan Spokane

Visitation for Ruth Eileen (Herbert) Sheridan, 90, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Audubon Park United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A 56-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Sheridan, died Tuesday. She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia.

She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in teaching and physical education. She later received her master’s degree from Whitworth College.

Mrs. Sheridan taught at Westview Elementary School for many years.

She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Women’s Club of Spokane, Spokane Area and Washington State Retired Teachers associations, Sandy Hills Spadettes Garden Club and Audubon Park United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Norman, died in 1986.

Survivors include two sons, Don Sheridan of Spokane and John Sheridan of Redmond, Wash.; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Marilyn Reed Spokane

Memorial service for Marilyn Reed, 53, will be at 3 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

A 30-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Reed died May 28. She was born in Frankfurt, S.D.

Mrs. Reed worked as an office clerk in government offices.

She sang with the Spokane Symphony Chorale for several years.

Survivors include a daughter; two sisters and a brother.

Dorothy Bartlett Lacey, Wash.

Memorial service for Dorothy Edna Bartlett, 97, was held at Panorama City Chapel in Lacey. Inurnment will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Bartlett, who was born in Spokane, died May 2.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1919 and then attended business college in Spokane and received training for the Civil Service.

Mrs. Bartlett worked for the Civil Service for 23 years before retiring.

She spent many summers on Kootenai Lake, British Columbia, and her winters in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. She moved to Panorama City, near Lacey, in 1978.

Mrs. Bartlett was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Olympia and the Mokauaikaua Congregational Church in KailuaKona.

Her husband of 61 years, Herbert, died in 1985.

Survivors include a daughter, Marie McKee of Corvallis, Mont.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Annie Gardner Creston, Wash.

Memorial service for Annie Pearl Gardner, 95, will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be at Creston Cemetery, Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Sunset, Wash., Mrs. Gardner died May 28.

In 1923 she married John Gardner. He died in 1978.

Mrs. Gardner was a homemaker and a member of the Creston Christian Church, Creston C.W.F. Civic Club and the Wilbur Senior Citizens.

Survivors include three sons, Warren Gardner of Marshall, Dale Gardner of Nine Mile Falls and James Gardner of Renton, Wash.; a daughter, Eileen Pfeiffer of Creston; 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Genevieve `Genny’ Bauman Kingston, Idaho

Memorial service for M. Genevieve “Genny” Bauman, 73, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg. Private burial will be held at Bauman Family Cemetery. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Born near Harvard, Idaho, Mrs. Bauman, died Monday from cancer.

She married Ivor Bauman in 1948 and lived in the Harvard area before settling in the Silver Valley.

Mrs. Bauman was a homemaker and a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church, where she was a Catholic Daughter, served as a regent after completing a ministerial development program and was a eucharistic minister and choir member.

Survivors include her husband; 11 children, Phyllis Hadfield, Annette Barril, Chris Bauman, all of Juneau, Alaska, Terry Bauman of Star, Idaho, Mary Taylor of Sandpoint, Dave Bauman of Spokane, Dorothy Anderson of Meridian, Idaho, Dianne Tuning of New Plymouth, Idaho, Carol Lewis of Kingston, and Rob Bauman and Karan Tucker, both of Boise; two sisters, Lena Wiley and Helen Hills; 31 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mae Panabaker Spokane

Graveside service for Mae Panabaker, 85, will be held in Mesa, Ariz., at a later date. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 65-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Panabaker died May 27. She was born and raised in Sandpoint.

She graduated from Sandpoint High School and in 1938 married Neal Panabaker.

Mrs. Panabaker worked as a bookkeeper for the City Transfer Co. in Spokane. She later worked as a hostess for the Washington State Senate in Olympia, sponsored by former Senator Sam Guess.

She was very involved in politics, serving as president of Pro American, vice chairman of the Spokane County Republican Central Committee, secretary of the Spokane Women’s Republican Club and head of the election board in her neighborhood for many years. She served as a delegate to many county and state conventions and as a volunteer in local, state and national political campaigns.

Mrs. Panabaker was a supporter of the Spokane Symphony and the Spokane Civic Theatre. She was also known for her award-winning rose garden.

Her husband died in Mesa, Ariz., in 1969, where they lived for a brief time after retirement.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jessica Wilcox; and a nephew, Dick Panabaker.

Allen Thomason Spokane

No service will be held for Allen E. Thomason, 67, at his request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 28-year Spokane resident, Mr. Thomason died Monday. He was born in Kerens, Texas.

Mr. Thomason worked in security for School District 81 for several years.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Durham of Mead; a son, Brett Thomason of Spokane; two sisters, Doris Segerlind of Houston and Martha Fields of Kerens; a brother, James Thomason of Waco, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Doris Nau Spokane

Private memorial gathering for Doris M. Nau, 88, will be held at a later date. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Portland, Mrs. Nau died May 25.

She graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle in 1928.

In 1933 she married Thomas Nau. They moved to Spokane in 1937.

Mrs. Nau was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of Christ Science, Manito Garden Club, Walnut Street Garden Club, Daughters of the Nile and was a longtime supporter of the Spokane Community Colleges. She also was a member of the Associated Garden Club of Spokane and was named Associated Garden Club Woman of the Year in 1991.

Her husband died in 1979.

Survivors include a son, Tom Nau Jr., of Irvine, Calif.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Esther Olson Hayden, Idaho

Private service for Esther Marie Olson, 69, will be held at a later date in Rolla, N. D. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Olson, who was born in Rolla, died Saturday.

She married Deryl Olson in 1951 and moved to North Idaho 29 years ago.

Mrs. Olson was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Deryl.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Brose of Nevada and Susan Barber of Spokane; a son, Lisle Olson of Hayden; 10 brothers and sisters; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Vivian Damon Kennewick

Memorial service for Vivian T. Damon, 66, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Damon, died Wednesday. She was born in Billings, Mont.

She was the owner and operator of the Damon House in Mica for many years. She had been living in Kennewick for the past two years.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Keith; a son, Mike Damon of Newport, Wash.; a daughter, Patti Tenvooren of Kennewick; a sister, Marjean Stead of Gig Harbor, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
