Adams County

Othello

Residents are proud of their community float, “Sun Dancer,” but none are happier with it than its designers, Lynette Caruthers and Larry Linderman. Caruthers dreams up giant flowers and exotic color schemes, while Linderman engineers it into reality. The duo begin work in January for the spring parade season.

Ferry County

Republic

During a recent community cleanup day, “The Kids Brigade” picked up 700 cigarette butts on Republic streets, earning $20 for the American Cancer Society. The children also fashioned special “butt cans” for downtown streets so smokers won’t feel so free to use the sidewalk as their ashtray.

Grant County

Royal City

Darin Smith was recently sworn in as police chief by Mayor Mike Stark. Smith has acted as chief two other times during the past five years, when the city lost or suspended a chief. Stark says Smith already has a good handle on city policy and management. Smith started with the city 10 years ago in the Public Works Department.

Lincoln County

Davenport

The Culpepper and Merriweather Circus, featured in National Geographic magazine, will entertain Davenport crowds June 18. It features an endangered species seminar and two African elephants, Barbara and Connie. Families are invited to the free seminar and tent-raising in the morning, with paid shows at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Pend Oreille County

Metaline Falls

The reopening of the Pend Oreille Mine is brightening the future of north Pend Oreille County. The mine, owned by Cominco American, will employ nearly 250 people. The company plans to begin a two-year construction phase in January. Cominco American says the zinc and lead mine should provide $10.5 million in annual employee income.

Spokane

The Spokane County Parks and Recreation Department will open its four swimming pools June 21. This year for the first time, a season pass is available. The $20 passes are good for 25 swims, and are available at the county parks office, 404 N. Havana. The county’s swimming pools are at Valley Mission Park, Terrace View Park, Park Road and Holmberg Park.

Stevens County

Kettle Falls

Local artist Shoni Maulding is exhibiting her work in the 1999 Western Design Conference. Maulding was chosen from among thousands of artists nationwide. The event takes place in Cody, Wyo., and if she is chosen as top artist, she will be awarded $10,000 toward the purchase of one of her pieces to be displayed in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody.

Rosalia

The annual Rosalia Battle Days celebration kicks off this weekend with a cowboy breakfast from 6 to 9 a.m. at the fire hall and a 7.1-mile run leaving at 8 a.m. from the Masonic Hall. A kids parade and race awards will precede the 10:30 a.m. main parade, featuring Grand Marshal Dorothy Haydon, a member of the Rosalia High School class of 1929. A barbecue at the fire hall starts at 11:30 a.m. and the 15th annual rodeo is at 1:30 p.m. both days.

The 10th St. Maries Art by the River Festival will open at Cherry Bend Boat Park on July 17. It will run 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Entertainment will include a children’s art adventure. Art also will be for sale.

The Sandpoint Recreation Department is sponsoring dance classes at StudioOne. Laurie Buck will teach a three-da yMommy and Me class June 14 at 5:15 p.m. It is geared toward 4- and 5-year-olds. Applications are available for the Coeur d’Alene Area Chamber of Commerce American Heroes Invitational Parade, sponsored by D.A. Davidson and Tom Addis Automotive. Students attending the University of Idaho for the first time are invited to attend a summer orientation program. A team of UI faculty and staff will present practical advice and answer questions. The programs will be at the UI Student Union Building June 24 and at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene at 7 p.m. June 15.

The Silver Valley Arts and Crafts Association will sponsor an arts and crafts fair Aug. 14 in conjunction with the Dave Smith Motors Jamboree.
