Bird Fair Today
Backyard wildlife
Learn about landscaping for wildlife and other facets of providing for and watching wildlife in your back yard at the Open Yard Bird Fair, which ends today at Blossoms and Bloomers, 11415 E. Krueger Ln.
The fair, co-sponsored by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department and groups such as the Audubon Society, features displays on bird feeding, nest boxes and dealing with problem wildlife.
But the centerpiece of the event is guided tours of Ron and Gerry Kruegers’ four-year-old project to restore 18 acres of farmland to native trees, shrubs and grasses for wildlife habitat.
The Kruegers work gives others ideas on how to create low maintenance yards and gardens that will be havens for birds and other wildlife.
The Kruegers are charter members of the Fish and Wildlife Department’s 12-year-old Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary Program.
The event runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Directions: From the intersection of Bigelow Gulch and Argonne roads, drive one mile east on Bigelow Gulch. Turn left on Pleasant Prairie Road and go straight north for another mile. Krueger Lane is a small driveway on the right about a halfmile after the roadway turns to gravel.
