Book Club

Name: Tuesday Morning Book Club.

City: Spokane.

Group history: Group, which numbers around 24, has been together for 25 years. Meets weekly between October and April, and maybe only 10 to 12 members show up each time. Began meeting at the Spokane Club a couple of years ago. Was formed originally by the late Sister Miriam Bernadette. Reads a variety of genres, biography, nonfiction and serious fiction. Group originally didn’t have a name, but when registered at Auntie’s Bookstore took their traditional meeting time as a name.

Book reviewed: “Dreams of My Russian Summers” (Scribner, 241 pages, $12) by Andrei Makine.

Group representative: Lois Steury.

The review: Author Makine is a Russian author who lives in France, and this novel is an English translation. Book centers on a brother and sister who, through the reminiscences of their grandmother, learn both of the richness of long-ago Paris and the sadness of their grandmother’s Russian childhood. “It’s a beautiful read, actually,” Lois Steury says. “The language is poetic. And it’s a really interesting examination of Russian during Stalin’s time.”
