Obituaries

Moreen Hamlin Spokane

No service will be held for Moreen Hamlin, a lifetime Spokane resident. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hamlin, 72, died Saturday.

She graduated from Rogers High School in 1944.

In 1948 she married Carl Hamlin.

Mrs. Hamlin was a homemaker. She also was a dancer, opera singer and piano player.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Skyler Hamlin of Colville, Wash., Maylon Hamlin of Newman Lake and Darin Hamin of Elk; three daughters, Carla Hamlin of Wasilla, Alaska, Laurana Shaw of Greenacres and Moreen Hamlin of Deer Park; two brothers, Wilmont and Maynard Ross, both of Spokane; 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

O.M. Kimmel Jr. Spokane

Graveside service for O.M. Kimmel, Jr., a former Deer Park resident, will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Deer Park, Mr. Kimmel died Friday. He was 77.

He graduated from Deer Park High School in the later 1930s.

Mr. Kimmel served in the Army during World War II, seeing action in the Philippines.

He served as treasurer, secretary and trustee of Leuthold Foundation Inc. for 51 years. He retired in 1997.

Mr. Kimmel was a member of the Deer Park City Council, Deer Park Masonic Lodge No. 134, serving as worshipful master in 1952,, and was a member of the Knights of the Rose Croix, the Scottish Rite Freemasons in the Spokane Valley and the El Katif Shrine Temple in Spokane.

Survivors include a daughter, Jari Evarts of Spokane; a son, Kerry Kimmel of Great Falls, Mont.; and two granddaughters.

Ourania Pappas Spokane

Trisagion for Ourania Pappas, 93, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

A longtime Spokane resident, Mrs. Pappas died June 4. She was born in Turkey.

She was a homemaker and a 34-year member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

Her husband, Antony Kasetta, died in 1986.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Sweeney of Spokane; two sisters, both of Greece; and two grandchildren.

Jesse Lee Spokane

Funeral for Jesse R. Lee, 18, will be at 2 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Lee, who was born in Spirit Lake, Idaho, died Sunday.

He was a student at Central Valley High School.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Randa and Greg Hansen of Spokane; his father and stepmother, Robert and Susan Lee of Sandpoint; two brothers, Jared Lee of Spokane and Stephen Lee of Sandpoint; a sister, Amanda Lee of Sandpoint; and his grandparents, Ivan and Maxine Botts of Anatone, Wash., Patricia Lee of Snohomish, Wash., and Ken and Helen McMillen of Spokane.

John `Jack’ Nelson Spokane

Memorial service for John E. “Jack” Nelson, 81, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Garland Avenue Alliance Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nelson, who was born in Fairview, Mont., died Tuesday.

He worked as a railroad section foreman for 14 years and then as the Coulee City, Wash., marshal for six years. He also was a rancher for 17 years.

He retired in 1984 and moved to Spokane.

Survivors include his wife, Edith; three sons, Steven Nelson of Dallesport, Wash., David Nelson of St. Maries and Larry Nelson of Salina, Kan.; three daughters, Janice Skidmore of Spokane, Kathy Pitts of Chelan, Wash., and Barbara Laroom of Yuba City, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Anne Burnside Spokane

Memorial service for Anne Burnside, 57, will be at 1 p.m. today at Northview Bible Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Opportunity, Mrs. Burnside died Sunday.

She graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1961 and moved to Spokane in 1972.

For several years she worked in food preparation for various restaurants, including at the Golden Grill in Spokane.

Mrs. Burnside was a 15-year member of Northview Bible Church and was a member of the Get Along Sams Chapter of the Good Sams Club.

Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Marty; a son, Jason Burnside of Boise; her mother, Frances Stone of Rathdrum, Idaho; three sisters, Susan of Rathdrum, Nancy Oleson of Renfrew, Pa., and Claudia Whitlock of Oakridge, Tenn.; and a brother, David Stone of Spokane.

Sister Kathleen Marron, S.P. Spokane

Vigil for Sister Kathleen Margaret Ann Marron, S.P., will be at 7 p.m. today at Mount St. Joseph. Funeral Mass is planned for 9:30 a.m. Friday at Mount St. Joseph. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Marron, 89, died Tuesday. She was born in Anaconda, Mont.

She entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Providence in Seattle in 1935.

Sister Marron professed her first vows in 1936 and her final vows in 1939.

She spent her career caring for children, as a prefect for boarders, in housekeeping and in child day care.

Her ministry assignments included work at St. Thomas Home in Great Falls, Mont., Sacred Heart Academy in Missoula, and at Providence Mary Immaculate School in DeSmet, Idaho. In 1982 she retired at Mount St. Joseph in Spokane.

Survivors include two grandnieces, Robin Haugen of Butte, Mont., and Bobbie Anderson of Anaconda; and several cousins.

David Adams Post Falls

Service for David L. Adams, 79, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Post Falls. Burial will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Adams, who was born in Garland, Utah, died Tuesday.

He grew up in Utah and and married Amelia “Mickey” Rosencrantz in 1943. They settled in Farragut Village near Athol, Idaho.

Mr. Adams served with the Royal Air Force in England during World War II. In 1945 he moved to Spirit Lake and later settled in Post Falls.

He worked as a welder for Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane before retiring in 1984.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Dan and Randy Adams, both of Post Falls, Wesley Adams of Las Vegas, Wayne Adams of Spokane and Phillip Adams of Honolulu; four daughters, Georjean Kuntz of Chattaroy, Kathy Garren and Merriann Irish, both of Post Falls, and Becky Hart of Colfax, Wash.; three brothers, George Adams of Post Falls, and Lowell and Wendell Adams, both of Hayden Lake, Idaho; three sisters, Beth Plaster of Spokane, Vera Dammarell of Coeur d’Alene and Maurine Gravelle of Post Falls; 30 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Raymond Anderson Spokane

Graveside service for Raymond E. Anderson, 85, is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Anderson, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1932 and then served in the Maritime Service.

In 1957 he married Betty Rick.

Mr. Anderson worked as an electrical engineer for many years.

Survivors include his wife; six children, Terry Anderson, Paul Muirhead, Janice Baker, Karen Schuth and Sally Pfeffer, all of Spokane, and Chuck Tartan of Las Vegas; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Melvin Myers Colville, Wash.

Memorial service for Melvin W. Myers will be at noon Saturday at the Kettle River Grange in Colville. Danekas Funeral Home in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Myers, who was born in Orient, Wash., died Saturday. He was 85.

He attended schools in the Washington towns of Kelly Hill, Larsen and Orient.

Mr. Myers farmed near Boyds, Wash., for many years. He retired from the Forest Service in 1976 after 17 years.

He was a member of the Kettle River Grange and the Cattlemen’s Association.

Survivors include four sisters, Ethel Kent of Boyds, Lucille Hansen of Colville, Theresa Watts of Spokane and Myrtle Bartol of Clarkston, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kettle River Grange.

Dorothy Couture Spokane

Funeral Mass for Dorothy P. “Dot” Couture, 89, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A longtime Spokane resident, Mrs. Couture died Saturday. She was born in Hibbing, Minn.

In 1913 she moved to Plummer, Idaho, with her family. In 1915 they moved to Spokane.

Mrs. Couture attended St. Joseph Grade School and Holy Names High School from 1928 until 1943.

She worked as a cashier and an usherette at several movie theaters in Spokane, including the Hippodrome, Majestic, Diluf, Granada and Rainbo theaters.

In 1942 Mrs. Couture became the first female projectionist in Spokane. Her picture was published in The Spokesman-Review, Motion Picture Herald and Hollywood Magazine.

In 1960 she and her husband, Ed, became partners in Pine Acres Pitch and Putt, which they designed and built. They sold the business in 1974.

Her husband died in 1976.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Thain of Spokane, three granddaughters and nine great-grandchildren.

Edna Carlberg Marysville, Wash.

Funeral for Edna M. Carlberg, 78, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Carlberg, who was born in Wisconsin, died Sunday.

She moved to Spokane in 1940. In 1952 she married Gunnar Carlberg. He died in 1988.

Mrs. Carlberg was a homemaker and a longtime supporter of the Disabled American Veterans and the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind and was involved with American Heart Association and American Cancer Society drives.

She had been living in Marysville for the past six years.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Roberts of Marysville and Judith Grotle of Everett; three sons, Gerald Mason of Sagle, Idaho, Gunnar Lee Carlberg of Hungry Horse, Mont., and Leonard Carlberg of Spokane; two sisters, Dorothy Corskie of Long Beach, Wash., and Lorraine Rusho of Newport, Wash.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lilac Blind Foundation, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

William Koenig Spokane

No service will be held for William F. “Bill” Koenig. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Koenig, who was born in Omaha, Neb., died Monday. He was 69.

He moved to Wallace with his family and then moved to Spokane. He graduated from North Central High School.

Mr. Koenig worked as a mechanic at Kaiser Aluminum for 32 years.

He was a member of the Over the Hill Gang.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Bessie; a son, Tim Koenig of Elk; two daughters, Beth Ann LaNier of Spokane and Nancy Strong of Dayton, Ohio; and a sister, Mary Kniefel of Elk.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Buckskin Denison Davenport, Wash.

Funeral for Buckskin Denison, 35, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the West End Community Center in Fruitland, Wash., on the west end of the Spokane Indian Reservation. Burial will follow at the Julia Brown Cemetery in Fruitland. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

A longtime Davenport resident, Mr. Denison died Saturday. He was born in Colville, Wash.

Mr. Denison worked as a taxidermist and was a member of the Northwest Taxidermy Association and the Washington Trappers Association.

He was also a member of the Colville Confederated Tribe.

Survivors include a son, Dillon Denison, at home; his father, Phil Denison of Davenport; his mother, Gloria Maki of Northport, Wash.; two brothers, Ferlin Denison of Colville and Farin Denison of Spokane; and a sister, Arril Denison of Fruitland.

Walter `Pete’ Lewis Spokane

Memorial gathering for Walter O. “Pete” Lewis, a 32-year Spokane County resident, will be held at a later date. Private inurnment will be at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lewis, 70, died Sunday. He was born and raised in Stanley, N.D.

He served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Lewis worked as a heavy equipment operator for 40 years, including 10 years on the Alaska Pipeline. He retired in 1985. Mr. Lewis was a member of Spokane Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; four stepchildren, Jack, Steve, Sheri and Jamie; five brothers, Elmer, LaVern, Myron, Lloyd and DeLaine; a sister, Darlene Allard; and five grandchildren.

Harvey Hermanson Colville, Wash.

No service will be held for Harvey J. Hermanson, a longtime Colville and Inchelium, Wash., resident, at his request. Danekas Funeral Home in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hermanson, who was born in Brandon, Minn., died Tuesday. He was 93.

In 1942 he moved to Spokane, where he lived for 12 years before moving to Colville.

He married Dora StandiferSchneider in 1965.

Mr. Hermanson worked as a bus driver for Greyhound Bus Lines for 26 years. He retired in 1968.

He was a member of the Colville Eagles Lodge and Amalgamated Transit Union 2794. He moved to Inchelium in 1975 and returned to Colville in 1992.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Phyllis Thompson of Modesto, Calif.; a stepson, Tony Schneider of Elk; three grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Robert Benzon San Diego

Memorial service for Robert Michael Benzon, 31, is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel.

Mr. Benzon, who was born in Alameda, Calif., died Saturday in a drowning accident in Acapulco, Mexico.

He grew up in Hayden Lake and attended Coeur d’Alene High School before graduating from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1986.

Mr. Benzon then attended Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, Calif., and worked in hotel and beverage management in the hospitality industry in California.

Survivors include his mother, Connie Farnsworth, and a brother, Jeff Benzon, both of Hayden Lake; and a sister, Terri Sumner of Coeur d’Alene.
