Familiar Chapter

Stephen Reid, who wrote a best-selling novel, “Jackrabbit Parole,” about his past as a bank robber is back behind bars after 12 years of freedom. He is charged with a bungled daytime bank robbery in Victoria, British Columbia, that triggered a chase and shootout. Reid, 49, and another man face numerous charges - including attempted murder and armed robbery. By chance, police were on their way to the bank to deal with a panhandler and saw the suspect. Reid, who in the 1970s was on the FBI’s most-wanted list, had stayed out of trouble with the law since his release from prison in 1987 and had become a respected figure in local literary circles. His wife, acclaimed poet Susan Musgrave, blamed Reid’s relapse on a recent return to drug abuse after years of abstinence.
