Joseph Malawitz Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Joseph A. Malawitz, 77. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Malawitz, who was born in Hartford, Conn., died Wednesday.

He grew up in Connecticut and studied at various trade schools before moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1938. Mr. Malawitz worked briefly for the railroad in Spokane.

In 1955 he married Lillian Wallbridge.

He lived in Spokane and began a career with General Telephone in Coeur d’Alene in 1957 as a lineman. He retired in 1986.

Mr. Malawitz moved from Spokane to Pierce, Idaho, after his retirement. He recently returned to Coeur d’Alene.

His wife died in 1991.

Bernice (Carkeek) Gaspard Spokane

Funeral for Bernice E. (Carkeek) Gaspard, a 50-year Spokane resident, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at the Odessa (Wash.) Cemetery.

Born near Irby, Wash., Mrs. Gaspard died Thursday. She was 72.

She graduated from Odessa High School and worked in the insurance business with R.J. Martin Insurance Co., Travellers and Carkeek Insurance Agency, which was on Northwest Boulevard in Spokane.

Her first husband, Stephen Carkeek, died in 1988.

Mrs. Gaspard attended St. David’s Episcopal Church and served as past president of the Quota Rotariannes.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Gaspard; a daughter, Barbara Carkeek Ardans of Dewey, Ariz.; two brothers, Dave Wacker of Davenport, Wash., and Gerald Wacker of Odessa; two sisters, Ruth Jacquot of Odessa and Florence Brevet of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Mike Mikoski Sandpoint

Memorial service for J. Mike Mikoski, 61, is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Missionary Baptist Church in Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mikoski, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He lived in Reedsport, Ore., from 1991 until settling in Sandpoint in 1998.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; a son, Vince Mikoski of Sandpoint; four daughters, Tami Peplinski of Mead, Kelly Mikoski of Billings, Mont., Teri Gaertner of Kansas and Kim Du Fresne of Tacoma; a sister, Lanie Henderson of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Ruth (Carlston) Rasmussen Pullman

Memorial service for Ruth Marie (Carlston) Rasmussen, 82, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pullman. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rasmussen, who was born in Ephraim, Utah, died Wednesday.

Following her graduation from high school in Utah, she attended Snow Community College for two years.

In 1938 she married Lowell Rasmussen and they moved to Pullman in 1947.

She was active with the Washington State University Women’s Club Camp Fire Girls, Great Decisions and served as president of the American Association of University Women. She was a founding member of Club 30 in Pullman.

Mrs. Rasmussen served as a docent for the WSU Fine Arts Museum, was active with the Women’s Relief Society, the Children’s Primary and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints She later returned to college and earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1982.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Kathleen Harrison of Moscow, Idaho; a son, Robert Rasmussen of Kingwood, Texas; a brother, Cliff Carlston of Glendale, Calif.; a sister, Jeanne Winder of Sandy, Utah; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
