Obituaries

Kent Sooy Cheney

Visitation for Kent N. Sooy, 81, will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Cheney Funeral Chapel. Funeral service is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at the chapel. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

A lifetime Cheney resident, Mr. Sooy, died Sunday.

He graduated from Cheney High School in 1935.

Mr. Sooy farmed for several years in the Cheney area.

He served on the Cheney School Board for 20 years and as a past board member of the Cheney Grain Growers. He was a member of the Cheney Grain Growers, Masonic Lodge 42, Spokane Scottish Rite, El Katif Shrine, Amber Grange, Washington State Cattlemen’s Association and the Pacific International Trap Association.

Survivors include his wife, Ella; a son, Gary Sooy, a daughter, Carol Johnson, a brother, Fred Sooy, and a stepson, Jerry Anderson, all of Cheney; two stepdaughters, Claudia Tarbert of Spokane and Janice Harris of Post Falls; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.

Ralph Matlock Spokane

Funeral service for Ralph A. Matlock will be at 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Matlock died Sunday. He was 66.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Matlock worked as an electrical technician for Spokane County for several years.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 249, the Scottish Rite Bodies, El Katif Shrine, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3386 and Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Carol; a son, Ralph Matlock of Spokane; three daughters, Kathryn Colton and Toby White, both of Coeur d’Alene, and Laurie Pizzi of Buckley, Wash.; his stepfather, Alan Hastings of Deer Park; a sister, Blanche Andrus, and a stepbrother, Ronald Matlock, both of Spokane; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jack Taft Sr. Metaline Falls, Wash.

Funeral service for Jack Eldon Taft Sr., 73, will be held at a later date. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Taft, who was born in Clancy, Mont., died Friday in Colville, Wash.

He graduated from Metaline Falls High School in 1942 and served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Taft worked for Grandview Mines and owned and operated a logging company. He also worked as a construction foreman on the Box Canyon Dam and Alaska Pipeline.

He owned Jack and Phil’s Drive Inn, West Star Tavern, Hoogy’s Restaurant and the Mount Linton Motel in Metaline Falls.

Mr. Taft was a member of American Legion Post 144, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40 & 8 and the Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Phyllis; three sons, Jack Taft Jr. of Metaline, Wash., Ken Taft of Spokane and Ed Taft of Ione, Wash.; two daughters, Connie Thew of Spokane and Linda Falwey of Metaline; two brothers, Sonny Taft of Mississippi and Jerry Taft of North Dakota; eight sisters, Phyllis Dysart of Colbert, Izzy Welling of Coeur d’Alene, Sue Loftin of Spokane, Vivian Rate of Montana, Edna Porter of Ione, Joyce Launer of Metaline, Alene Miller of Idaho and Mel Masseman of California; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Rose Kewosh Deer Park

Graveside service for Rose Mary Kewosh, 53, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Elk Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 45-year resident of the Deer Park and Elk areas, Mrs. Kewosh died Sunday. She was born in Park Rapids, Minn.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Robert; three daughters, Roberta Plasterer, Phoebe Strickler and Bobbiejo Edwards, all of Elk; two brothers, Melvin Fisher of Elk and Rodney Fisher of Minnesota; two sisters, Betty Newell of Spokane and Shirley Hubbard of Spangle; and four granddaughters.

Brent Repp St. John, Wash.

Memorial service for Brent Kelly Repp, 17, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the St. John Community Fairgrounds.

A lifetime St. John resident, Brent has been presumed drowned in a June 10 boating accident on Rock Lake.

He attended St. John-Endicott High School and worked on the family farm.

Brent played basketball, baseball, golf and football.

He was involved with Future Farmers of America, where he was part of the livestock judging and soil evaluation teams. He also participated in the Junior Livestock Show in Spokane, earning Grand and Reserve Champion awards in fitting and showing eight times. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott, Wash.

Survivors include his parents, Rick and Jenny Repp of St. John; two brothers, Kevin Repp of St. John and Lance Repp of Pullman; his grandparents, Loren and Mamie Blumenshein, and Janet Repp, all of St. John; and his great-grandmother, Louelle Hall of St. John.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John Fire Department or the St. John-Endicott Chapter of the Future Farmers of America.

Delone Roth Spokane

Visitation for Delone G. Roth, 80, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2112 W. Francis. Burial will be in Tooele, Utah.

A 57-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Roth, died Friday. She was born in Tooele.

She worked as an accountant for the state Highway Department for several years. She retired in the 1970s.

Mrs. Roth was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 16th Ward.

Her husband, Bill, preceded her in death.

There are no surviving family members.

Dorothy Taylor St. Maries

Service for Dorothy F. Taylor, 87, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Taylor, who was born in Kahlotus, Wash., died Tuesday.

She graduated from St. Maries High School in 1929.

She married Albert Taylor in 1931, and they settled in Cherry Creek near St. Maries in 1933.

A homemaker, Mrs. Taylor was a member of the St. Maries Grandmothers Club, St. Maries Home Demonstration Club, St. Maries Garden Club and St. Maries Senior Citizens.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Raymond and William Taylor, both of St. Maries; two daughters, Betty Brown of St. Maries and Dorothy Bishop of Kent, Wash.; a brother, Earl Smith of Oregon; a sister, Joyce Hardman of Federal Way, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Donna Suko Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Donna Mae Suko, 70, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. A gathering will follow at The Jewett House in Coeur d’Alene. Mrs. Suko, who was born in Kennewick, died Monday.

She graduated from Holy Names Academy in Spokane in 1946 and attended Washington State College. In 1949 she married Elton Suko.

Mrs. Suko graduated from the University of California in Sacramento in 1965. She settled in Coeur d’Alene and became a home economics teacher for Lakeland School District, where she taught for 21 years.

Mrs. Suko was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, the Kootenai Medical Center Auxiliary and the 3C’s.

She had served as a volunteer grandparent for first-graders at Sorenson Elementary School for the past three years.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Cinda Ring of Portland and Pamela Defenbach of Boise; a son, Gregory Suko of Bellevue, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Josephine Barrow Gig Harbor, Wash.

Memorial service for Josephine H. Barrow, a former 64-year Spokane resident, will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Spokane. Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Barrow, who was born in Butte, Mont., died June 8.

She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Spokane, where she was active in the Church Guild and other programs.

She moved to Gig Harbor nine months ago.

Her husband, Kirk, died in 1986.

Survivors include four sons, Joseph Barrow of Longbranch, Wash., Eugene Barrow of Federal Way, Wash., Alex Barrow of Spokane and Kenneth Barrow of Hollywood, Calif.; and 18 grandchildren.

Daniel Mills Lancaster, Calif.

No services will be held for Daniel F. Mills, 79. Halley Olsen Funeral Home in Lancaster is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mills, who was born in Walla Walla, died May 3.

He graduated from Sprague (Wash.) High School in 1937.

Mr. Mills served in the Army during World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star during combat in Italy.

He worked at the Naval Supply Depot in Spokane for several years. When it closed in the 1960s, he was transferred to Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Survivors include his wife, Oma; a daughter, Beverly Edmonson of Rosamond, Calif.; a sister, Emily Jones of Cheney; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Catherine Crawford Kellogg

Funeral Mass for Catherine V. Crawford, 89, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg. Burial will take place at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway, Ore. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Crawford, who was born in Oregon, died Monday.

She graduated as valedictorian from Kellogg High School in 1928. She married Paul Crawford in 1932.

Mrs. Crawford lived in the Philippine Islands, Triumph, Idaho, and Careywood, Idaho, before settling in California.

She returned to the Silver Valley in 1964 and was a homemaker, and a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters.

Her husband died in 1964.

Survivors include four daughters, Pauline Crabb and Christine Otero, both of California, Sharon Kromholtz of Spokane and Terry Parsons of Kingston, Idaho; a son, Don Crawford of California; a brother, Jack Ladd of Kellogg; a sister, Sister Marie Emmeline Ladd of Othello, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren.

Henry Naccarato Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Henry Anthony Naccarato, 59, at his request. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Naccarato, who was born in Priest River, Idaho, died Tuesday. He grew up and attended school in Priest River. In 1956 he joined the Army.

Mr. Naccarato settled in Spokane in 1959 after his military service. He owned a florist shop and in 1978 moved his business to Denver.

He retired and moved to Coeur d’Alene this year.

Survivors include a son, Anthony Naccarato of Kellogg; a daughter, Deborah Goetz of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, Benny Naccarato of Rathdrum, Idaho; and four grandchildren.

Ryan Reichert Spokane

Memorial service for Ryan B. Reichert, 19, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

A two-year Spokane resident, Mr. Reichert drowned Saturday in Fishtrap Lake.

He was born in North Platte, Neb.

Mr. Reichert graduated from Ferris High School this year and worked at Fred Meyer stores in Spokane and Yakima for three years.

Survivors include his mother, Beverly Gostovich of Spokane; his father, Gary Reichert of Anacoco, La.; two sisters, Rachel Reichert and Christina Gostovich, both of Spokane; and his grandmother, Mary Luttrell of Omaha, Neb.

John Lingle Spokane

Visitation for John R. Lingle, 77, will be from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A 10-year Spokane resident, Mr. Lingle, died Sunday. He was born in Union City, N.C.

He was a railroad section worker.

Survivors include his wife, Florence; two daughters, Lorraine Watts and Delores Mango, both of Charlotte, N.C.; five stepdaughters, Shirley Lamphere of Portland, Millie Meley of Tuscon, Ariz., Rose Ruiz of Sugarland, Texas, Helen Sicilia of Federal Way, Wash., and Gladys Erdman of Lewiston; a stepson, Paul Meley of Tucson; a sister, George Brooks of Locust, N.C.; and a brother, Alfred Lingle of Charlotte.

Gordon Eggleston Spokane

No service will be held for Gordon Glenn Eggleston, 68, at his request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Hoquiam, Wash., Mr. Eggleston died Sunday.

He served in the Army and in 1958 moved to Spokane.

He graduated from Eastern Washington University with a master’s degree in communication and taught for five years at Shaw Middle School and in Malaga, Wash.

He worked in sales at Inland Audio Visual Co. for 21 years and retired in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline; three daughters, Helen Byrne and Susan Campbell, both of Spokane, and Sharon Giampietri of Nine Mile Falls; two brothers, John Eggleston of Spokane and Gene Eggleston; a sister, Mary Michael; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
