Shadow Wins First-Round Test At Chico Spokane Home To Sounders In Next Step Of U.S. Open Cup
The Spokane Shadow landed the final jab on what might be called “Batter Berto Night.”
Alika Cosner scored off a rebound in the second overtime Wednesday, giving the Shadow a 3-2 victory over the Chico Rooks in the first round of soccer’s U.S. Open Cup.
Cosner rebounded Dave Berto’s penalty kick at 116 minutes.
Berto had also been fouled at 73 minutes of regulation, and tied the match at 2 with the ensuing penalty kick. He was also driven down hard during the first overtime, remaining on the ground for 5 minutes although no penalty was called.
Spokane (9-1) advances to a Wednesday home match at Albi Stadium against the Seattle Sounders. Tickets go on sale Friday at G&B Select-A-Seat outlets.
Next Wednesday’s winner plays Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids July 13 at Denver.
Chico (10-4) scored at 20 minutes on Felipe Ternero’s feed to Luis Orellana.
Jeff Rose tied the match 20 minutes later, with a header following Chad Brown’s free kick from the far corner. The ball came to Rose after bouncing off Spokane’s Brett Houck.
Joe Munoz’s goal at 55 minutes put the Rooks back in front. Berto’s first penalty kick came after he was hit from behind during a throw-in.
Spokane played without injured forwards Brian Ching (facial injury) and Zane Higgins (hamstring).
Chico topped Spokane 4-1 in 1997, the other time the teams met.
