Local Boy Scouts Earn Eagle Awards

Kootenai County Boy Scouts from Troop 218 of Rathdrum, Twin Lakes and Spirit Lake were recently honored with awards for their accomplishments.

Courtney Peterson, Eric Patterson and Andy Bradley, have earned the Eagle Scout award.

Peterson, son of Court and Elizabeth Peterson of Rathdrum, involved members of his Venture Patrol in providing the Spirit Lake Senior Center with a computer, printer and software and taught computer skills to members of the center.

Peterson has been active in scouting for eight years and has participated in many activities, including Mountain Trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmaron, N.M., Camp Easton on Lake Coeur d’Alene, earned the PADI Medic First-Aid certification, attained the National Rifle Association Pro Marksman Award and is an Order of the Arrow Ordeal member. He will continue his involvement with Troop 218 as an instructor and plans to attend the University of Idaho in the fall to study computer engineering.

Patterson, the 18-year-old son of Chris and Sharon Patterson of Rathdrum, organized improvements to the Mineral Ridge Trail near Beauty Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Tasks included blocking off cut trails and the installation and painting of post and rail trail barriers. Scouts and adult volunteers donated 124 hours to this project.

Patterson has been involved in scouting for seven years and earned 22 merit badges while participating in numerous activities, including camping and backpacking trips, and completed the COPE Course at Philmont Scout Ranch. He recently graduated from International Correspondence School and has been appointed a reservist for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. He plans to attend North Idaho College and major in forestry/wildlife management.

Bradley, the son of Dan Bradley of Rathdrum, successfully guided his troop in the restoration of the Rathdrum Cemetery directory using leadership skills to coordinate efforts with Rathdrum City Hall and the cemetery board.

He is a recent graduate of Timberlake High School and has been involved in scouting for 10 years. He attended the 1998 National Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Va., and also earned merit badges at Camp Easton in Coeur d’Alene. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow Ordeal and earned his World Conservation patch and NRA Marksman Award. He plans to travel to Alaska during the summer and attend North Idaho College in the fall while continuing his involvement with Troop 218 as an assistant Scoutmaster and training staff member for Adult Leader Training.
