Spokane Indians Go 0-For-Boise

The song remains the same for the Spokane Indians in Boise.

The Hawks scored four first-inning runs and then turned back a late Spokane rally to beat the Indians 5-3 and complete a three-game Northwest League season-opening series sweep.

Last year Boise beat the visiting Indians four straight times to open the season.

The Hawks batted around in the first inning against Spokane starter Carlos Pichardo. Gary Johnson staked Boise to a 2-0 lead with a two-run single and Kevin Ticen added a two-run double later in the inning and the Hawks never looked back. Pichardo lasted just three innings, giving up five earned runs on four hits and four walks.

Boise starter Sean Brummett checked the Indians on two hits through the first three innings and Greg Moore (1-0) followed with three shutout innings to pick up the victory.

Spokane didn’t score until the seventh. James McAuley walked, reached third on back-to-back wild pitches and came home on a groundout.

Felipe Alou Jr. picked up the third and final hit for the Indians when he singled in the eighth inning. Alou took second on a balk and scored when James Shanks reached first on a throwing error. Shanks stole second and later scored the Indians’ third run on a Mark Ellis sacrifice fly.
