Benewah County St. Maries

Regulus Stud Mills, Inc., was awarded $139,701 in damages after a jury determined that H.J. Burns, Co., employees were at fault for a fire that damaged equipment and a second story storage room at the St. Maries mill June 7, 1996. After a five-day trial, the jury determined that H.J. Burns, Co., was 66 percent at fault for the incident, while Regulus Stud Mills, Inc., was 34 percent responsible.

Bonner County Sandpoint

The Pend Oreille Arts Council is sponsoring Seven Days in the Life of Sandpoint, a juried art exhibit. It is open to all Bonner County residents, including professional and amateur artists. Photos, drawings or paintings based on an event in Sandpoint July 1-7, 1999, will be the subject matter. Framed and ready-to-hang entries will be accepted Sept. 13, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Old Powerhouse, 120 E. Lake. Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Help is available through the Boundary County Youth Crisis and Domestic Violence hotline. Volunteers are trained to help end the cycle of abuse and all information is kept strictly confidential. For help, call (208) 267-5211.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The Coeur d’Alene Job Service will host a three-day workshop for individuals who are out of work or want a new job. The workshop will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 22-24 and include information on finding jobs in the local area, developing a resume that will get an interview and interviewing techniques.

Latah County Moscow

A birch vase made by 16-year-old Ben Carpenter will be featured at a American Association of Woodworkers show in Tacoma this weekend. The vase and 19 other items were selected from artists representing nine countries. Carpenter’s piece was one of 20 to be selected from the 9,000 member American Association of Woodworkers.

Shoshone County Silver Valley

On Tuesday, 13 Silver Valley schools and organizations will be awarded grants from the Idaho Community Foundation. The ICG will be awarding $151,543 to non-profit organizations in Shoshone, Benewah and Kootenai counties.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Libby

The Forest Service has denied an appeal over the proposed Deer Marl timber salvage in the Libby Ranger District. The decision came from the regional office in Missoula on May 26. The appeal, filed by American Wildlands, the Ecology Center and the Lands Council, argues that nearby clear-cutting and road-building by the Forest Service and Plum Creek Timber Co. have already damaged wildlife habitat in the area. The proposal is to remove 2.1 million board feet from about 600 acres.

WASHINGTON

Pend Oreille Newport

Freshman students soon may not be able to leave school during the lunch hour. The school board is considering tightening the closed campus policy. Currently, students can leave with parental permission. According to school officials many freshmen skip lunch and meet with older kids who smoke. The policy aims to restrict freshmen to the cafeteria during lunch and keep students from smoking.

Spokane County Spokane

The Spokane Parks and Recreation Department is looking for boys and girls ages 8 to 14 to form a summer dance team that will perform at local events and activities.

Dancers are ask to attend a six-week class that begins June 22 and will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Northeast Youth Center, 4001 N. Cook. Children can enter the dance team and classes at any time after the start date. Participants will learn choreographed routines to hip hop music. No previous dance experience is necessary.

Cost is $22 with limited scholarships available through the Spokane Park and Recreation Foundation. For more information about the class, call Kimbre at (509) 482-0708.

Whitman County Pullman

Three positions will be open for Pullman School District school board elections in November. Anyone who is considering running is invited to pick up a copy of a free informational booklet titled “Serving on Your School Local Board,” published by the Washington State School Directors’ Association.

Filing dates for school board candidates are July 26-30 at the county’s auditor’s office. There is no filing fee.
