CMGI Inc., which holds a stake in nearly 40 Internet businesses including Lycos, confirmed Thursday it has been talking with Compaq Computer Corp. about buying a controlling interest in AltaVista, a Lycos rival that offers an array of services and a portal to other Web destinations.

France followed the lead of Belgium and lifted a ban on Coca-Cola products Thursday.

Orders for big-ticket manufactured goods - led by gains in aircraft and autos - climbed 1.4 percent in May, a sign that the nation’s battered manufacturing sector could be headed for a revival.

GTE will sell its in-flight communications unit, GTE Airfone, to Oak Hill Capital Partners LP.

Alaska Airlines and its aircraft mechanics union have ratified a new, 42-month contract. The contract covers more than 1,000 aircraft maintenance technicians, technician helpers, janitors and fleet service employees.
