WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

USA Waste, formerly Waste Management of Washington, asked to change its mitigation agreement with the county. The company was looking for construction and operations extensions on its planned landfill facility. The agreement also will be considered by the Pollution Control Board during a July 1 hearing.

Ferry County Republic

The children of Ferry County are doing their best to put a dent in the local bug population. As part of the summer reading program at the local library, children participate in a bug contest. Prizes are awarded for the biggest, most complete, most interesting and most beautiful insect.

Grant County Coulee City

The Coulee-Hartline School District needs to cut the budget, and to do so, may have to shut down one of its three aging buildings.

Lincoln County Sprague

Angela Vold and Clay Wilken, both 18, were recently awarded the Gold Congressional Award by the joint leadership of Congress.

Pend Oreille County Newport

Ray Harding’s vocational woods class is one step closer to knowing how to build a house. The high school students built a children’s playhouse. The house sports an aluminum roof and vinyl windows. Harding says his class will take orders to build the playhouses for profit next year.

Spokane County Millwood

Spokane County Commissioner Kate McCaslin will have a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Millwood City Hall, 9103 E. Frederick Ave. McCaslin will discuss the Argonne Bridge replacement, the Valley Couplet and Park Road construction projects, the new Plantes Ferry Park project and other topics.

Stevens County Colville

Local horse riding enthusiasts are doing their part to aid in the fight against cancer. While many others will be walking in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life,” they will ride to raise money. Each rider makes a donation.

Whitman County Colfax

The Perkins House Ice Cream Social, sponsored by the Whitman County Historical Society, will be held tomorrow from 1 to 4 p.m. Proceeds from the day’s events go to the Whitman County Historical Society. Special events include a reunion of the Perkins and Tower families, music by the Snake River Six and refreshments. A vintage toy display, $3 antique appraisals and a raffle for a dollhouse-sized model of the Perkins House will also be held. Follow the signs in Colfax to the Perkins House, on Perkins Avenue.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Reconstruction of state Highway 3 will begin July 6. Northbound traffic will be detoured to Meadowhurst Road. There will be one southbound lane going to St. Maries. The $4 million project includes widening and straightening 2.6 miles of the highway through a hill near Reid’s corner. The contractor, DeAtley Co. of Lewiston, plans to finish the project by October.

Bonner County Priest River

The city of Priest River will sponsor “The Great Pend Oreille Train Ride” July 3 and 4. The train ride is from Newport to Priest River and then to Sandpoint. There will be two departures on Saturday and one on Sunday, with room for 300 to 400 people per trip. Each city will have other events.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission will conduct a public hearing July 15 to accept public comment on a Special Use Permit application. Clifford and Mary Kramer are seeking to amend the site plan of Feist Creek Resort. The permit calls for the demolition of an existing lodging facility and construction and operation of a new 16-unit guest lodge. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the main courtroom of the Boundary County Courthouse. For information, call (208) 267-7212.

Kootenai County Harrison

The Steamboat Trader in Harrison is sponsoring a squawfish derby this weekend on the waters around Harrison and Lake Coeur d’Alene. The derby is open to children ages 6 to 13. The two-day contest costs $6 and participants must register at the Steamboat Trader. The weigh-in will be today and Sunday at 4 p.m. Two $100 prizes will be given for the longest fish and the heaviest fish.

Latah County Potlatch

Two ranchers on Potlatch Mountain have reported the loss of cattle. Lester Rieber and Londa Sexton have each reported finding dead cattle. The cows died from gunshot wounds. Sexton has reported at least a dozen cattle missing. The matter is being investigated by the Latah County Sheriff’s Department.

Shoshone County Wallace

Roy C. Raiha, Jr., 41, was taken into custody Wednesday and booked in the Shoshone County Jail on charges of possession of a bomb or destructive device. Shoshone County Sheriff’s officers discovered blasting caps in the vehicle Raiha was driving after they received reports of a suspicious vehicle. The blasting caps were taken to Sunshine mine for secure storage.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Troy

D.J., a 21-year-old grizzly, was found dead June 10 in the Seventeen-mile drainage north of Troy. U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologists from Libby suspect that D.J., the mother of at least 13 cubs, was killed by another grizzly. There was no sign of human involvement in the death. Fish and Wildlife officers found the grizzly after picking up stationary radio signals from D.J.’s collar on three successive flights in June.
