Hoerner Tops In Top Comp

Todd Hoerner became the only driver in NHRA Division Six history to win a title in four different classes by beating Gary Olsen in Sunday’s Top Comp drag finals at Seattle International Raceway.

Hoerner has now won a “Wally,” the trophy named for NHRA founder Wally Parks in Super Street, Super Gas, Super Comp and Top Comp.

Puyallup’s Mike Sauls won his second straight Interstate Superstock Racing Series race Saturday at Stateline Speedway.

Spokane drivers Mike Behar and Dave Garber were third and fourth, respectively.

Also on Saturday, Joe Ruddach won his third race in the Northwest Mini-Supers, and Steve Shaffer took his first Vintage Modified victory. John Ross won the Golden Wheel main event.

Baseball

Vancouver, Wash., took advantage of three bases-loaded walks to edge the Spokane Heat 4-2 in the championship game of the Trail Invitational NABF tournament in Trail, British Columbia.

The Heat earned a berth in the title game with a 9-1 semifinal win over Bozeman, Mont. Starter Josh Mills struck out eight and allowed only four hits against Bozeman.

Chet Womach finished the tournament with nine hits for Spokane, which also got a solo homer from Eric Bell in Sunday’s semifinal win.

Basketball

The Spokane Stars AAU girls basketball club won two more games from the visiting Canadian Junior National Team Sunday at University High School.

The Stars hammered the Canadians 105-61 in the U-18 game as Loree Payne, from Havre, Mont., threw in a game-high 24 points. Carey Sauer added 16 points for Spokane.

In the U-16 contest, the Shining Stars got 17 points from Carmi Eberle in a 42-33 win.
