CMGI Inc., a major investor in Internet businesses, is buying Compaq Computer Corp.’s AltaVista Web site in a $2.3 billion deal that gives it a new Internet portal to draw visitors to its array of online services.

McDonald’s Corp. has agreed to pay a $4 million fine to the government for not reporting injuries suffered by children at some of its restaurant playgrounds. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said McDonald’s violated a 1995 requirement requiring the company to report defective playground equipment to the commission. The commission said 400 children were injured on a toy no longer used at the eateries.

Federal regulators said Tuesday they are prepared to approve a merger between SBC Communications and Ameritech Corp., provided the two stick to a set of conditions they proposed to the government.
