Othello

Big Bend Community College has joined the Department of Social and Health Service, Employment Security and local employers to offer pre-employment training. Clients receive an eight-week intensive course in workplace safety, skills, sexual harassment and computers. Low-income parents and Work First recipients are eligible.

Ferry County

The Drug Free Learning Fair will be April 17. The event is hosted by Ferry County Community Services AmeriCorps and Prevention Program. Kids will get a chance to win bicycles, books and crafts. Anyone wishing to donate books or easily repaired bicycles is asked to call (509) 775-3353 ext. 515.

Invitations have been engraved for the April 15 opening of the Grant County Corrections Work Release Center, says Sheriff Bill Wiester. Overflow inmates have been living in a tent jail in downtown Ephrata.

Creston High technology students are working on the “vehicle design challenge,” designing and constructing a wheeled vehicle that can travel under its own power seven meters and stop.

The city of Newport has restricted truck traffic on all city roads except state highways and the downtown cross-streets. Only school buses and local delivery trucks are exempted.

Cheney is again selling its EcoGreen compost for use as mulch or top dressing. The compost, created at the city’s sewage treatment plant, is $5 a bag or $12 per cubic yard. Call 235-7207 for more information.

A county-wide meeting to plan programs to reduce substance abuse and violence over the next two years will be March 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hill-Ray Plaza in Colfax. Bonner Community Hospice will hold an eight-week grief acceptance course beginning March 29 at 6:30 p.m. The class will meet at the Women’s Center in Sandpoint Monday evenings through May 24.

Cable rates in Moscow are being raised for the third time in as many years. Century Communications plans to raise basic cable from $10.50 to $10.94 a month, and standard service from $21.50 to $23.74 a month.

A 74-year-old Wallace man was taken into custody Tuesday after allegedly threatening a neighbor with a 9mm Browning handgun. Thomas Jones is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly threatened to shoot Phil Garwood in Garwood’s home.

Libby

Lincoln County residents voiced concern about an off-highway vehicle use proposal at a March 2 public meeting at the Kootenai National Forest headquarters. The Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service are proposing that off-road vehicles using public lands in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota to stay on roads and trails.
