Dear Readers: Don’t throw away canceled stamps! Save them for Stamps for Children, which is a not-for-profit organization.

According to their information, “The stamps are sent to children’s groups that request them and the stamps are used not only to interest children in the hobby, but also as educational aids and for arts-and-crafts projects.”

Please don’t send stamps that:

Are ripped, torn or damaged in any way.

Are taped, glued or stapled to the envelope.

Are peeled from the envelope.

Are attached to red or green envelopes.

When the stamps are soaked to remove them, the red or green dye from the envelope soaks into the stamp, discoloring it.

Send your stamps to: Stamps for Children, 27 Pine Street, Lincroft, NJ 07738-1827.

According to the information provided, the group sent out over 1.6 million stamps in 1997 after a mention in this column. (From 1987 to last year they sent out over 3.4 million.)

They were able to send stamps to 19 different states. So, my dear readers, get your scissors and start clipping. - Heloise
