They’Re Hawk-Proof

One reason SUVs are popular around here is that many Inland Northwesterners who occasionally drive outside the city secretly fear that some of this area’s hawks are capable of snatching up small cars.

Putting Spokane on the map: Some readers thought we were nuts to make an issue of the fact that, in its list of national temperatures, The Washington Post lists “Boise” by itself but requires the state designation for “Spokane, WA.”

Several suggested Boise being a capital explained it. (The rest of the Post’s list shoots down that theory.)

But others suspect we’re on to an insidious conspiracy. So we took a look at a few other newspapers from around the country (March 14 editions). And though our findings are not conclusive, we want to share.

The (Baltimore) Sun: Lists neither.

The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal: Lists “Boise” but not Spokane.

The (Tucson) Arizona Daily Star: “Boise” and “Spokane.”

The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune: “Boise” and “Spokane.”

The Cincinnati Enquirer: “Boise” and “Spokane.”

The Boston Globe: Lists “Boise” but not Spokane.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Lists “Spokane” but not Boise.

The Dallas Morning News: “Boise, Idaho” and “Spokane, Wash.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “Boise” and “Spokane.”

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer: “Boise” and “Spokane.”

Use the force: KPBX-FM film critic Bob Glatzer wonders if George Lucas is opening the new “Star Wars” movie on May 19 — Glatzer’s birthday — in the hopes of scoring a favorable review on Spokane radio.

Local band names we’d like to see: Hard Water, Weak Mayor System, STA Plaza Smokers, Term Limits, Burning Light, Rockin’ RVs, Nice Out, North Division, Frickin Lake, Big Plate and The Gary Darigols.

Learning this dam language: “So it’s OK to say `damn’ if you say `beaver’ first?” - Arlene Stromberger’s 5-year-old grandson, A.J.

Just wondering: Have you ever seen a guy driving a Porsche who didn’t have a mustache?

Attaboy time: The Spokane Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking nominations for a wide-ranging lineup of local tourism awards. There are lots of categories for both businesses and individuals. Check it out.
