Valley Firefighters In Seattle Competition

A team of Spokane Valley firefighters will compete in the eighth annual Firefighter Challenge Sunday in Seattle.

The nine-member Valley Fire team is the defending champion of the grueling event, which raises money for the Leukemia Society of America.

Last year, Valley firefighters competed with more than 450 individuals from across the Pacific Northwest. They came in first after climbing 69 floors of the Columbia Center Tower in full fire gear.

This year, Valley firefighters are accepting pledges for the leukemia society until April 16, said firefighter Terry Soderberg.

Those interested in contributing can mail pledges of any amount to the: Leukemia Stairclimb, c/o Spokane Valley Fire District, 10319 E. Sprague, Spokane, WA 99206.

Make checks payable to the Leukemia Society of America.

Gordon’s race car at mall

NASCAR star Jeff Gordon’s race car will be on display at the Spokane Valley Mall today

The car, called The Chromalusion Monte Carlo, was the winning car in last year’s Winston Cup Championship.

It will be on display on the first floor in front of the J.C. Penney store from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pictures by Kit’s Camera will be available from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

WV SCOPE meets Thursday

West Valley SCOPE will hold its monthly community meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Millwood Town Hall, 9103 E. Fredrick.

The meeting will include general business, changes in by-laws and organization of the annual Millwood parade and carnival, to be held on June 5.

Food bank honors churches, schools

The Valley Food Bank has given its 1998 Caring and Sharing awards to eight churches and six schools.

The awards go to those who have supported the food bank with contributions of money, food and volunteer time.

Each of the winners receives a certificate and plaque of recognition.

Winners include St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christ Lutheran Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Veradale Church of Christ, Opportunity Presbyterian Church and the Spokane Valley United Methodist Church.

School winners include Central Valley, University, East Valley and West Valley high schools, Evergreen Junior High School and Sunrise Elementary School.
