Grants for the poor available

April 16 is the deadline for Eastern Washington organizations to submit grant applications for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. The program, created in 1970, was formed by Catholic bishops to address the root causes of poverty in the United States.

The grants are available to nonprofit, community-based organizations working for change in their local communities. Grant criteria include an emphasis on the involvement of poor and low-income people in the planning and implementation of a project. Grants are awarded on the basis of need, not religious affiliation. Local grants usually range from $1,000 to $2,000.

To receive a grant application, call Sister Mary Medved at the Catholic Charities Parish Social Ministry Office at 358-4273 or (800) 831-1209.
