Book Club

Name: Stitch and Study Book Club

City: Spokane

Group history: Group of 10-12 or so women, ranging in age from 36 to 76, has been meeting for two years. Name comes from the fact that the members do handwork as they discuss the books. Meets weekly on Monday nights at Northwood Presbyterian Church and is open to all members of church congregation. Reads variety of books, mostly religion-based, which are chosen by group vote.

Book Reviewed: “Eight Weeks to Optimum Health” by Dr. Andrew Weil (Fawcett Books, 276 pages, $13.95 paper, ISBN 0-44-900-0265).

Group representative: Liz Hall.

The review: A follow-up to author Weil’s best-selling “Spontaneous Healing,” the book offers a practical, step-by-step method for improving one’s health. “We were studying how we could eat better, what vitamins to take,” says Hall, who adds that the group tries to vary what it reads - “We’re willing to try just about anything,” she says - but also uses the group as a means of “nurturing each other spiritually.” Meets throughout the year, except for July and August. For the rest of the year, Hall says, “We crank it out.” The group’s reaction to the Weil book: “We loved it.”
