Dixie Shells Cardinals In Twinbill

Dixie College limited North Idaho College to four hits Saturday during a 10-0, 12-1 baseball sweep at St. George, Utah.

NIC’s only run during the Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader came on Jeremy Isherwood’s homer in the fourth inning of the second game.

Cardinals pitchers allowed 27 hits, including nine homers.

Matt Miller homered as Santa Clara roared back for an 11-8, 11-inning win in the second game of a doubleheader split at Gonzaga’s August/A.R.T. Field.

GU (11-10-1, 3-3 West Coast Conference) won the opener 11-8 and led the second game 8-2 after six innings. Mike Dorsa (3-1) pitched three scoreless innings and the Broncos (8-21, 2-7) forced extra innings by scoring two in the seventh, eighth and ninth.

Kevin Taylor’s three-run triple highlighted a six-run second inning for the Zags in the first game. Forrest Higgins (2-1) earned the win by allowing no earned runs for 4-2/3 innings of relief.

GU’s Barry Matthews homered in both games.

Kevin Daling scattered nine hits over nine innings as Whitworth defeated Pacific 11-1 to salvage a split of its Northwest Conference doubleheader at Forest Grove, Ore.

Pacific won the opener 11-10 on the strength of a 10-run fourth inning. Whitworth (10-14, 6-2) had 26 hits on the day.

Community Colleges of Spokane finished in fourth place after losing twice to Las Vegas at the Yavapai Mile High Classic at Prescott, Ariz.

Las Vegas won the scheduled game 17-8 despite trailing 7-6 after four innings. The teams were matched up again, in the tourney consolation, and Las Vegas won 4-3 on the strength of a two-run fifth.

Kevin Richardson had three hits on the day for CCS.

Crew

The Washington State women’s junior varsity eight and novice eight crews will row in the Grand Finals at the San Diego Crew Classic today.

The Cougar varsity eight boat will row in the Petit Final (consolation).

The Cougar junior varsity eight boat finished second in their heat. WSU’s novice crew finished second in their Saturday prelim to advance.

Washington State’s varsity eight boat finished fourth in the second of the two-heat prelims for the Jessop-Whittier Cup.

WSU’s time was the sixth-fastest of the women’s collegiate varsity boats Saturday but the format permits only the top three finishers in each heat to advance to the Grand Final.

On Montlake Cut in Seattle in the Husky Invitational Regatta, the WSU varsity four finished second to Washington’s A and B boats while the Cougars’ second novice eight boat was also a runner-up to the host Huskies.

Only the WSU third novice eight boat was a victor. Gonzaga won a women’s novice eight race.

WSU hosts Washington in a dual regatta April 3 at 2 p.m., at the Cougars’ home course at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.
