WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY

Lind

Three ambassadors have been chosen to represent the town of Lind at regional celebrations this summer. Lindsay Wilson has been chosen Junior Miss. Her princesses are Alicia Garza and Janette Robertson. The students and their parents will begin work immediately on the community float. The float will cost the community about $5,000, and fund-raisers are being planned.

FERRY COUNTY

Republic

The Ferry County Fair Board is looking for young women interested in being the official spokesperson for the annual event. Applications for fair queen are available at the WSU Extension office in the basement of the county courthouse. The pageant will be April 16. Interested girls must be Ferry County freshmen, sophomores or juniors.

GRANT COUNTY

Moses Lake

The Genie Industries plant going up on the outskirts of Moses Lake should bring an economic boom, and that means Samaritan Hospital may have to expand. Currently, the hospital is licensed for 50 private rooms. It is looking into better use of space and an expansion plan. The county expects a population increase of 10,000 people.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Creston

The Easter Bunny has been stocking up for his April 3 appearance in Creston. Helping him get ready are Nicole Conway, Judy Anderson and Ronda Gollehon. The trio is looking for candy and cash donations to defray costs, as well as a group of sturdy egg dyers and hiders. Those wishing to help with the egg-stravaganza are urged to call Conway at (509) 636-2034.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Ione

Residents of Ione hope to receive a Community Development Block Grant. Concerned citizens will meet to discuss the issue Monday at Papa’s Place at 6 p.m. Residents of north county communities will be asked what they see as the major goals for their towns and the area as a whole.

SPOKANE COUNTY

Deer Park

Noted television horticulturist Phyllis Stevens will discuss trees during a seminar April 13 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Deer Park Community Center, 316 E. Crawford. The seminar, sponsored by the North County Organic Garden Club, will include lessons on proper pruning and care, and information on the best traditional varieties. STEVENS COUNTY

Northport

Newport’s school maintenance and operations levy has gained a nod from voters. Now the district won’t have to consolidate with Colville or Kettle Falls. The picture is bleaker in Colville, where voters denied a levy earlier this year. If the April 27 retry of that measure fails, the district will cut 40 jobs and $1.465 million from its budget.

WHITMAN COUNTY

Pullman

Cathie Eileen West has been chosen as the new Sunnyside Elementary principal in the Pullman School District. West, who succeeds Fritz Hughes, is currently the elementary principal in the Eastmont School District in East Wenatchee, where she has worked for seven years. She has held administrative positions at several school districts in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

BENEWAH COUNTY

St. Maries

Northwest Power Planning Council Chairman Todd Maddock spoke March 15 at the Benewah County Courthouse. Maddock discussed the possible removal of dams on the Columbia River, steelhead-run recovery efforts and forest water-quality measures. Maddock was appointed to the council by former Gov. Phil Batt in January 1995. The meeting was sponsored by the Republican Central Committee of Benewah County.

BONNER COUNTY

Sandpoint

The Local Emergency Planning Committee will hold its quarterly meeting at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Sandpoint High School auditorium. Idaho Technology Resource Council consultant Mike Fischer will present information on Y2K and the difference between being compatible and compliant. John Cline, director of the Bureau of Disaster Services, will speak on Y2K preparation. The meeting is open to the public.

BOUNDARY COUNTY

Bonners Ferry

Eagles Auxiliary will hold a craft and bake sale in the newly-expanded facility at 9 a.m. April 3. Table space is free and must be reserved by Wednesday. For more information, call Carol at (208) 267-3024.

KOOTENAI COUNTY

Coeur d’Alene

U.S. Sen. Larry Craig is holding town hall meetings throughout the state to discuss the future of Social Security. The Coeur d’Alene meeting will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. April 8 in the Lake City High School auditorium. Craig said the meeting will cover how the current system works, why many see a need for a change, and a general overview of the alternatives.

LATAH COUNTY

Moscow

Wednesday marked the end of films at the Nuart Theatre in Moscow. The theater is one of 28 being closed by Atlanta-based Carmike Cinemas. The company closed the Kenworthy Theatre in Moscow in January. Carmike operates more than 2,700 screens in 36 states.

SHOSHONE COUNTY

Kellogg

The Community Action Agency/Shoshone County Food Bank energy-assistance outreach program scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled. The agency was notified the state ran out of money for the program and could no longer provide the service.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Libby

A project redirecting Parmenter Creek is scheduled for completion this summer. The plan to minimize the risk of flood damage includes moving the stream to a new channel south and east upstream of the existing Dome Mountain Avenue bridge and building a new bridge. The streambed will be anchored with rocks and stumps.
