Central Valley Edges Gonzaga Prep

Charles Whipple’s sudden-death goal lifted Central Valley to a 5-4 Greater Spokane League soccer victory over Gonzaga Prep on Monday at Gonzaga Prep.

In other GSL openers, North Central nipped Mead 2-1 in overtime, Ferris blanked Lewis and Clark 2-0, University handled Shadle Park 4-1 and Mt. Spokane dumped Rogers 3-1.

Gonzaga Prep’s Nick Ascolese scored a pair of goals, including a game-tying score at the 72:30 mark to send the match into overtime.

Ben Zimmerman had two goals for CV.

The Bears scored first when Matt Johnson connected just 2:49 into the game. Eric Byrd’s goal 1:15 later pulled Gonzaga Prep even and Tony Hertel’s score at the 15:36 mark put the Bullpups up 2-1.

Zimmerman’s first goal of the game knotted the score, but Ascolese netted a penalty-kick goal with 2 minutes left in the half to give Prep a 3-2 lead.

Andy Cooper scored for CV just 38 seconds into the second half to tie it at 3-3 and Zimmerman’s second score put the Bears up 4-3 at 58:30.

Bobby Johnson connected in overtime to lift North Central over Mead. Rob Loft’s goal staked visiting Mead to a 1-0 lead at the half. Aaron Fielder’s goal pulled NC even 10 minutes into the second half.

Ferris used two second-half goals to knock off LC at Hart Field. Ivan Cummings and Ian Clausen scored for the Saxons, who outshot the Tigers 27-12.

Grant Falco scored two goals and David Massey added a goal and an assist to lead U-Hi past the Highlanders at Shadle.

Bobby Labelle had two goals and an assist to lead the Wildcats past Rogers.

Lukas Rydberg gave Mt. Spokane a 1-0 lead at the 14-minute mark of the first half.

Labelle scored to put the Wildcats up 2-0 14 minutes into the second half.

Carl Buchnell pulled Rogers to within 2-1 with a goal at 63 minutes.

Labelle scored his second goal with 5 minutes left to play to clinch the victory.

Softball

Shadle Park and Lewis and Clark were unable to resume a suspended game because Hart Field was unplayable. The game will be rescheduled.
