Obituaries

William Rushing Jr. Post Falls

No local service will be held for William P. Rushing Jr., 66. Memorial service will be April 10 in the Chicago area. English Funeral Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Rushing, who was born in Greenville, Miss., died Thursday.

He lived in Illinois and worked for United Airlines as a pilot for 35 years before retiring. Mr. Rushing was involved in the Federal Aviation Administration speaker’s panel for airline safety and gave flying lessons.

He moved to Post Falls two years ago from Illinois.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy; two sons, William Rushing of Louisiana and Todd Rushing of Post Falls; two daughters, Carol Carr of Kentucky and Alyia Rushing of Post Falls; and five grandchildren.

Chester Chastek Spokane

Funeral Mass for Chester Chastek, 83, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 75-year Spokane resident, Mr. Chastek, died Saturday. He was born in Burke, Idaho.

He graduated from Gonzaga High School in 1934 and from Gonzaga University in 1938 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. In 1940 he graduated from Gonzaga Law School.

Mr. Chastek served four years as deputy prosecuting attorney for Spokane County before entering into private practice. He was a partner in the firm of Trezona, Chastek, Lorenz and Parry for 25 years.

He worked as an officer for the Pack River Co. for many years after leaving private practice.

He taught at the Gonzaga Law School for 15 years and served as a member of the Gonzaga board of regents.

In 1989 he received the distinguished alumni award from Gonzaga University.

He was a member of the Washington State and American Bar Associations, Timber Products Manufacturing Association, Goodwill Industries, Junior Achievement, Rotary International and Spokane Valley Rotary Clubs, and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Catherine; six children, Joyce Esposito, Laurence Chastek, Michael Chastek, Patrick Chastek, Thomas Chastek and Gary Chastek; a brother, Richard Chastek, and a sister, Bernice Larson; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

William Johnson Spokane

Memorial service for William D. “Bill” Johnson, 82, was held Saturday at Whitworth Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A 45-year Spokane resident, Mr. Johnson, died Thursday. He was born in Seattle.

He served with the Coast Guard, and worked as a teacher in the Sprague, Wash., Riverside and Mead school districts for 30 years.

Mr. Johnson was involved with the YMCA and the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of Whitworth Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Frances; a son, Clyde Johnson of Noxon, Mont.; two daughters, Carolyn Williams of Cheney and Marcia Johnson of San Leandro, Calif.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mildred (Fisher) Malone Spokane

Graveside service for Mildred N. (Fisher) Malone, 82, will be at 2 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd-South Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 25-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Malone, died Friday. She was born in Peetz, Colo.

In 1946 she married William Malone. He died in 1987.

Mrs. Malone worked as a waitress for various restaurants in the Spokane area for many years. She also was a homemaker and a volunteer at the Senior Citizen Center.

Survivors include two brothers, Wayne Fisher of St. John, Wash., and David Fisher of Electric City, Wash.; and two sisters, Edna Canfield of Spokane and Betty Dockham of Tacoma.

Sister Rose Angela Brutto, S.P. Spokane

Vigil service for Sr. Rose Angela (Rose Mary) Brutto, S.P., 90, will be at 7 p.m. today at Mt. St. Joseph Convent Chapel, 12 W. Ninth. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sr. Rose Angela, who was born in Chicago, died Saturday.

In 1926 she graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Missoula and entered as a postulant with the Sisters of Providence in Seattle.

Sr. Rose Angela became a novice in 1927, and professed her first vows in 1928 and her final vows in 1931.

In 1949 she graduated from Gonzaga University with a bachelor’s degrees in education and philosophy. She received her master’s in education from Creighton University in 1957.

She was a primary grade school teacher from 1928 to 1956 and worked with the children who boarded at the schools. She worked at St. Joseph Academy in Sprague, Wash., St. Thomas Home and St. Gerard School, both in Great Falls, Mont., Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Wallace and St. Francis Xavier School in Missoula.

Sr. Rose Angela later worked with the College of Great Falls for many years as a director of student teachers, an instructor, associate professor of education and a preschool teacher.

In 1988 she earned the title professor emeritus.

In 1991 Sr. Rose Angela retired from Mt. St. Joseph.

Survivors include a sister, Theresa Neaves, and a brother, Albert Brutto, both of Hamilton, Mont.

Jack Sandberg Spokane

Memorial service for Jack D. Sandberg, 78, will be at 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A 75-year Spokane resident, Mr. Sandberg, died Thursday. He was born in Aberdeen, Wash.

He graduated from Rogers High School and served with the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Sandberg served as president for the Petek and Sandberg Builders Inc. and was the past president of the Spokane Homebuilders Association. He was the proprietor of Diamond Bowl and Silver Lanes Bowling Centers. He also owned and operated Jack’s Golf Cart Sales and was a member of the Wandermere Men’s Club.

Survivors include his former wife, Betty; a daughter, Janice Sandberg of Spokane; a brother, Eugene Sandberg, of Spokane; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Marion (Woodward) Mitley Spokane

Funeral service for Marion Freda (Woodward) Mitley, 77, will be at 1 p.m. today at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 75-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Mitley, died Friday. She was born in Valley, Wash.

She worked as an office manager for Peerless Dentist for 22 years. She also co-owned and operated Staples Supply Co. from 1974 to 1984.

She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Emil, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Mitley of Post Falls; and two grandchildren.

Nora Fisher-Bright Metaline Falls, Wash

Graveside service for Nora Kathleen Fisher-Bright, 81, will be at 3 p.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fisher-Bright, who was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, died Friday.

Mrs. Fisher-Bright worked as a secretary at Fairchild Air Force Base and later at the Fairchild Credit Union for 25 years She was a member of the Professional Secretaries, the Parliamentarians and the Musicians Union. She moved to Metaline Falls seven years ago.

Her first husband, Verne Fisher, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her second husband, Harry; a son, Arthur Fisher of Spokane; two sisters, Marguerite Evart of Sequim, Wash., and Daisy Hill of Bridgeport, Wash.; and a brother, John Creed of Lincoln, Calif.

Ervin Goldsmith Kellogg

Private family service for Ervin Benjamin Goldsmith, 89, will be held later. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Goldsmith, who was born in Ortonville, Minn., died Friday.

In 1950 he moved to the Silver Valley from Minnesota and worked as a truck driver on the Alcan Highway of Alaska. He later returned to Minnesota and worked as a log truck driver.

Mr. Goldsmith returned to the Silver Valley and worked as a miner for the Bunker Hill Mining Co. for 24 years, retiring in 1974.

He was a member of the Bunker Hill 20-year Club and the Industrial Union.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Velva in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Byington and Pat Wolf, both of Kellogg; three sons, Robert and Tom Goldsmith, both of Montana, and John Goldsmith of Spokane; two brothers and one sister, Harold and Vernon Goldsmith, and Irma, all of Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Ruby Snow Spokane

Memorial service for Ruby L. Snow, 93, will be at 11 a.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Private inurnment will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Snow, who was born in Four Corners, Mo., died Friday.

Her family moved to Pendleton, Ore., when she was 3 years old. Her family later moved to Wallace, Cottonwood and Mullan, Idaho, areas and then to Spokane after the death of her father.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and Kinman Business University, and worked for John W. Graham Co. for many years.

In 1926 she married Kenneth Snow. He died in 1991.

During World War II she was active with the Red Cross first-aid program and was an air-raid warden.

She farmed her Valley acreage, producing fruit and vegetables, and raised poultry and livestock.

Mrs. Snow helped form the Evergreen Fish and Aquarium Club and was active in the 4-H program.

She was a resident of the Park Place Retirement Center until 1995, when she moved into the Sullivan Park Care Center. She served on the residents councils at both facilities.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald and Robert Snow, both of Spokane; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 10 greatgrandchildren and one great-great-granddaugther.

Curtis Denenny Spokane

Visitation for Curtis Robert Denenny, 85, will be from noon to 7 p.m. today at Hennessy-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Denenny, who was born in Borup, Minn., died Friday.

He graduated from North Dakota State University and served with the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Denenny was co-owner of Denenny Brothers’ Seat Covers with his brother, Ray, for many years.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Marion; three sons, Dick, Rob and John Denenny, all of Spokane; two daughters, Mary White of Kennewick and Lauri Skala of Selah, Wash.; two sisters, Frances Johnson of Spokane and June Walters of Fargo, N.D.; and 12 grandchildren.

Evelyn (Johnson) Peters Spokane

Memorial service for Evelyn G. (Johnson) Peters will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will be held at Moran Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peters, 89, died March 16.

A lifetime Spokane resident, she graduated from North Central High School in 1927 and married Erwin Peters in 1939.

Mrs. Peters worked for Washington Water Power Co. for many years.

She was a past president of the United Methodist Women and was a member of Women of Water Power and Spokane Sorosis.

Her husband died in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, John Peters of Seattle and William Peters of Studio City, Calif.; a daughter, Jane Salyer of Oak Ridge, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Walter Wolfrum Davenport, Wash.

Funeral service for Walter C. Wolfrum, 82, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport. Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery in Davenport.

Mr. Wolfrum, a lifetime Davenport resident, died Thursday.

He served in the Army during World War II and worked as a wheat farmer in Davenport for several years.

Mr. Wolfrum was a member of the Davenport Branch of the Church of Latter-day Saints, the Davenport Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years, June; a daughter, Cheryl Gibboney of Davenport; three brothers, Eugene Wolfrum of Davenport, Howard Wolfrum of Moses Lake and Daryl Wolfrum of Fruitland, Wash.

Joseph Doyle Spokane

Visitation for Joseph C. Doyle, 88, will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Private burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

A 51-year Spokane resident, Mr. Doyle, died Thursday. He was born in Chicago.

He served with the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Doyle founded Doyle & Associates, and Doyle Engineering Inc. and retired in 1993.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrews.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Dolores; three sons, Joseph Doyle of Springfield, Ill., Robert Doyle of Seattle and Lawrence Doyle of San Diego; a daughter, Jodi Bush of Atmore, Ala.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Verna Dowell Spokane

Visitation for Verna M. Dowell, 84, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Dowell, who was born in Mankato, Minn., died Saturday. A 55-year Spokane resident, she was a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1996.

Survivors include three daughters, Glenna Pedersen, Donna Barnett and Janis Woodall, all of Spokane; two sisters, Maudie Cotant of Spokane and Vivian Bittle of Wenatchee; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
