Students Receive Medals At Deca Competition
Lake City and Coeur d’Alene high schools DECA members recently attended a three-day state conference and qualified for the National Conference competition to be held in Orlando, Fla., in late April.
Lake City High School received 31 medals representing the top 10 in role play’s and occupational tests in the semifinal awards, with Megan Motz and Cassandra Gordon, taking first place with their Public Relations/Blood Drive project.
LCHS students qualifying to attend nationals are as follows: Jill Waters, who will serve as the new DECA state president, Jenny Sue Anchondo, Josh Metz, Heath Sande, Katie Carper, Chad Troxel, Tiffany Smidt, Pete Faucher, Joe Kroetch, Charlie Miller, Dustin Stockwell, Jim Everson, Chris Deering and Joy Turner, who was elected the DECA Northern District vice president. Team advisor is Russ Blank.
Coeur d’Alene High School competitors Josh Hooker, Gina Newby and Erin Joch, placed first with their free enterprise project, and Kelsey Sherich, earned first place for retail merchandising.
Joch, Morgan Fitzgerald, Steve Scammell, Matthew Robson and Mike Travis were occupational test finalists. Students in the Problem Solving Interview Event were Katie Baum, Charle Waller, Eric Sande, and Scammell.
The 13 CHS national qualifiers are Bret Andrews, Jessica Basler, Baum, Erin Gee, Kathy Fritze, Newby, Hooker, Joch, Jeremy Nicholson, Bret Andrews, Sarah Sazama, Rachel DeMotte and Sherich. Jon Hasting serves as the advisor.
Coeur d’Alene High School senior DECA students recently received recognition at the Young Entrepreneurship Business Plan Competition held at Gonzaga University in Spokane.
Students from all over the Inland Northwest created a business idea and then submitted plans to members of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce to be judged on financial projections, company description, operations and market analysis.
Lori Johnson took first place in the individual category with business plans for her project, Perfection Pizza. She will receive $300 along with a Microsoft software package and paid tuition to Washington Business Week Event at Gonzaga University this summer.
