Whitworth Takes 2 From Willamette
Justin McKitterick’s one-out double to left field in the 12th inning Saturday completed Whitworth’s 7-5, 10-9 baseball sweep of Willamette at Merkel Field.
McKitterick drove in Nick Schuerman, who opened the 12th with a single off Paul Duman (0-1). Whitworth reliever Brandon Hanzal (3-2) pitched three-hit, scoreless ball for four innings, striking out four.
Nate Lynch’s three-run home run during a five-run third highlighted Whitworth’s opening win.
Hanzal, in relief of Kevin Daling (5-4), earned his first save by leaving the bases loaded in the seventh.
Jason Bay and Travis Knight homered in the 10th to give Gonzaga (24-17-2, 12-9-1) a 13-10 West Coast Conference win at San Diego.
The scheduled second game was called by darkness, tied at 6 in the ninth. It may be rescheduled, depending on WCC standings at the end of the season. The Toreros are 11-12-1, 26-21-1.
Bay was 5 for 6 with five RBIs and three runs in the opener. Scott Asan was 4 for 4, Kevin Taylor scored three times and had two RBIs, and starter Steve Bennett struck out eight for the Zags.
Brent Dayton pitched a complete-game, two-hitter in the opener and visiting Community Colleges of Spokane swept Wenatchee Valley 12-2, 16-4.
Kevin Richardson was 4 for 5, with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs, to lead the second-game win for the Sasquatch (18-14, 12-10 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges).
Aaron Vandarwarka of CCS was 4 for 5, with two runs and three RBIs, in the opener. Eric Garma and Keith Thompson were both 3 for 5 in the nightcap.
Coeur d’Alene’s Jesse Hoorelbeke finished 4 for 7 in College of Southern Idaho’s 6-1, 8-6 sweep of North Idaho College (16-32, 9-25) at NIC Field.
Softball
Katie Carpenter pitched a two-hitter in the opener, and Whitworth (9-25, 5-9) defeated Linfield 2-1 in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Franklin Park.
Nikki Coplin threw a four-hitter and Micki Johnson went 3 for 4 with three RBIs as the Wildcats (20-17, 11-5) won the second game 8-3. Whitworth’s Jessica Spiker was 3 for 6 with two RBIs for the day.
Kylee Curry (12-3) won both games and Angel Fairbanks hit a three-run homer in the nightcap of Community Colleges of Spokane’s 3-2, 11-3 sweep of Highline at Midway, Wash.
CCS improved to 18-4 in the NWAACC and dropped the Thunderbirds to 13-7.
Missy Bonanno had an RBI single and the game-winning sacrifice fly in the sixth in the opener. Stephanie Shelton had two runs and one RBI in the second game.
Cheryl Andrizzi struck out eight and pitched a five-hitter, and North Idaho College (17-24) defeated Dixie 5-0 to salvage a split at St. George, Utah. Dixie won the opener, also 5-0.
Crew
The 12th-ranked Washington State women’s varsity eight crew defeat No. 14 Oregon State by .2 seconds at the dual regatta on Vancouver Lake at Vancouver, Wash.
The Cougars’ second vasity eight, varsity four and novice eight boats also beat the Beavers on the 2,000-meter course.
Washington’s varsity crew held off the New Zealand National Team to win its ninth consecutive Windermere Cup through the Montlake Cut in Seattle.
The Huskies completed the 1,500-meter course in 4 minutes and 30.40 seconds, 7 seconds faster than New Zealand. The course was shortened to 1,500 meters because of 30 mph winds.
