4Th Avenue At Sunset Blvd. Being Realigned

A realignment of Fourth Avenue at Sunset Boulevard near Rosauers in Browne’s Addition will improve traffic safety at that intersection, city officials said.

The Spokane City Council on Monday approved plans and specifications for the project, which has been estimated at about $120,000.

City staff will now seek bids on the work.

The project consists of realigning Fourth Avenue where it meets Sunset Boulevard so that the two streets will intersect in a perpendicular fashion with standard corners at right angles.

Currently, Sunset Boulevard veers from northeast to southwest, putting the intersections along the gridded residential streets of Cannon’s Addition at obtuse angles.

Work includes closing Elm Street between Sunset and Fourth and closing Fourth between Cannon Street and Sunset.

The closures and realignment will require pavement patching, curbs and sidewalks, city officials said.

A two-way left-turn lane is planned for Sunset Boulevard at the new Fourth Avenue intersection.

A city staff report said, “This project will increase safety by reducing confusion caused by too many intersecting streets.”

Work is expected to begin later this year.

In other action, the City Council voted to set a public hearing for June 1 on the formation of a local improvement district in the East Central Neighborhood. The hearing will be at 1:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The district is being formed to finance the paving, curbs and sidewalks on Rebecca Street from Seventh to Eighth avenues.

The district includes property on the south side of Hartson Avenue between Freya and Rebecca as well as the properties on both sides of Rebecca from Seventh to Eighth.

Cost of the improvements is estimated at $69,000.
