Medical Lake Posts Mixed Doubles Upset

Unseeded Sara Cotton and Jeremiah Johnson of Medical Lake upset the top-seeded No. 1 mixed doubles team from Shadle Park during Friday’s opening round of the 54th Inland Empire high school tennis tournament.

Cotton and Johnson overcame Lisa Trefts and Bryan Austin 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 at Central Valley.

Unseeded Krista Henning and John Kercher of Mead continued the upset tale at No. 1 mixed doubles with a 7-6, 6-4 win over second-seeded Ana Cornea and Nicholas Gardner of Kamiakin.

Every other No. 1 or 2 seed in No. 1 boys singles, No. 1 girls singles, No. 1 boys doubles and No. 1 girls doubles advanced to today’s semifinals.

The four seeds in No. 1 girls singles and No. 1 boys doubles advanced to the semifinals without dropping a set.

Unseeded Riggs Kubiak of Gonzaga Prep defeated No. 4 Jeff Spaur of Southridge 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 boys singles quarterfinals.

Today’s semifinals and finals are at Mead, Mt. Spokane and Whitworth College.
