Book Club

Name: CC Book Club

City: Spokane

Group history: Group of eight (seven women, one man) formed in 1992. Meets monthly, alternating between members’ houses for dinner and talk. While the group began as a book club, it has evolved into more of a discussion group. The common theme: exploring spirituality. A particular topic is chosen, and each member addresses it any way he or she wants. Maybe read a book. Maybe read a poem. Maybe sing a favorite song.

Book reviewed: “Beyond Religion” by David Elkins (Quest Books, 352 pages, $16.95).

Group representative: Carol Bonino.

The review: Elkins’ book, which was Bonino’s choice, is aimed at readers who want more than than a conventional religious experience . “This book,” says the author, “is for those who are spiritual but not religious.” Elkins outlines eight non-traditional paths, among them counseling and psychotherapy, friendship and community, creative expression and sacred sexuality. According to Bonino, Elkins’ book “pretty much validates what the group has been working on for seven years, that there are other ways beyond traditional religious study to express your spiritual self.”
