Storey-Book Ending For Timberwolves
Steve Storey tossed a two-hit shutout as Lewiston stopped Lake City 10-0 in five innings in an A-1 Region I baseball game Saturday at Lewiston.
Lewiston (14-13) earned a state berth while LC’s season ended at 14-15.
The Bengals used a nine-run fourth inning to eliminate the Timberwolves, who were playing their fifth game in six days.
Neil Litchfield and Jim Schmidt homered for the Bengals.
In an A-2 District I-II seeding game, Lakeland survived a game of big innings to down Orofino 14-11 at Genesee.
Lakeland (20-6) advances to state as the region’s top seed. State will be held at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore., beginning Thursday.
The Hawks open against Buhl (21-5-1) at 10 a.m. PDT.
Mike Banks (7-0) picked up the win for Lakeland in relief. Dan Dixon’s two-run homer in the fourth put the Hawks ahead 11-8.
Prairie handled Wallace 14-0 in an A-3 District I-II playoff game at North Idaho College.
Prairie (14-10), the third-place finisher from District III, advances to state. Wallace finishes at 3-17.
Orofino slipped past Lakeland 2-1 in an A-2 District I-II softball seeding game at Moscow.
No other details were reported.
Orofino (21-2) goes to state as the region’s top seed. Lakeland (17-3) will take on District V champ Bear Lake in a state opener Thursday at 5 at Quad Park in Post Falls.
Tennis
Lake City snapped Coeur d’Alene’s three-year regional championship run in the A Region tourney.
The Timberwolves tallied 92 points to Coeur d’Alene’s 81. Lewiston had 78 and Moscow was next at 48.
The top two finishes in boys and girls singles and doubles and mixed doubles advance to state, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Boise.
LC won the team title without any individual winners.
In boys doubles, Court Sutmiller and Cory Johnson of CdA defeated the Souza brothers of LC (Matt and Dave) 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.
The Souzas bounced back to beat Chad Spears and Randy Gossade of Lewiston 6-2, 6-3 to earn a trip to state.
Emily Wroe and Erin Stransky of CdA topped Van Kasner and Eileen McKeown of LC 6-3, 6-2 in girls doubles.
College basketball
Kate Hawley, a 6-foot post player from Libby (Mont.) High, has signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at North Idaho College.
